I just purchased a 1983 Revenge 22. I have a set of twin 150-HP Yamaha motors from a different project laying around. Would [twin 150-HP Yamaha motors] be too much weight or power [for a 1983 Revenge 22]? I plan to do some long distance runs for Tuna out of Santa Cruz, so I need to make sure the boat will be safe in big seas.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

Mark, are the [twin 150-HP Yamaha motors] two-strokes? A good rule of thumb for that hull is to keep the transom weight under 750-lbs. Since it has the older style splashwell, too much weight on the transom will leave you with wet feet in any kind of chop or slop. I run my Outrage 22 Cuddy out of Santa Cruz Harbor, but have yet to run for tuna. A pair of 150's will be pretty thirsty, so you need to think about how far you can go with just 77 gallons on board. I think the boat will handle the power just fine, and I'm certain it will plane on just a single 150.

Too much weight. Those Yamaha 150s weigh about 425 lbs each.

The National Park Service used that boat for many years in this area and it ran great with a single 150.

Thanks for the responses! Yes the [twin 150-HP Yamaha motors] are two-strokes. The [twin 150-HP Yamaha motors] are a matched pair with all the controls and everything so I think I will probably be better off selling them as a package and purchasing something specifically [for a 1983 Revenge 22]. So I guess my next question is what is the optimal engine set up [for a 1983 Revenge 22]? I know [a 1983 Revenge 22] is rated for 240-HP, but would I get better fuel economy with a 200-HP? Also what's the best size for a kicker motor?

Thanks again for the help!
Mark

We have twin XR6 big block (2.5L) Merc 150 V6's on my father's Guardian 22. They weigh 431 lbs and the boat has the 140 gallon fuel tank in it. As you can see in the image below the boat does sit low but it still has a good bit of freeboard. I will say that when fishing in heavy following seas water will come over the stern, however the boat does have the optional full width splashwell door which helps keep the water out. Also when heavy in reverse water will build and roll into the splashwell. Planning time is nonexistent and the boat will cruise with great ease in the upper 30-MPH range. Also the boat will plane and reach the 30- to 35-MPH range on a single engine.

Full fuel and twin 150's

1983 Revenge 22, 1992 200hp Evinrude, 1989 15hp Evinrude. 60 gallons of fuel aboard and quite a bit of gear. I have no idea what the motors weigh. Seldom does a wave make it over the stern, and that is only when trolling and someone is standing back there. Hope that helps. John

Oh yeah, they have made great strides in the kicker business. That 15 will only push it to about 7 knots wide open. It will push it to 7 knots at 2/3rds throttle. I bet a 9.9 big foot or what ever they call these motors designed to be kickers, will push it to 7 knots also.

Mark,

If you have a matched set of counter rotating motors, they are 25" shaft length and will be too long for the Revenge 22 which takes 20" twins. You could use jack plates but I suspect you would have a wet floor on sloppy conditions. The boat and the transom can take the power easily however.

Mark,

It looks like we have the same boat, a 1983 Revenge 22. Mine is pretty much as it came out of the factory 24 years ago so if you need any pictures of missing OEM equipment, shoot me an e-mail or you can post it on CW. John

Hi Mark-

I am from Santa Cruz (now live in marin) but go there frequently and I own a 1989 Revenge 22. I helped Rob with a Sea Drive conversion on my old Outrage 18 and wouldn't mine taking a look at your 22. I may be able to assist some in the repower.

My email is brianard2@comcast.net if you you are interested.

Tks,
-brian
