My engines are still running but are pushing 1,000 hours. I have a chance to purchase twin 2006 E-TEC 250-HP with 200 hours. I will need controls and gauges.

Current owners of E-TEC engines: do you like your E-TEC motor?

Is an E-TEC motor worth the cost?

Would you purchase an E-TEC motor again?

I have always been a Yamaha guy, but I have to admit all the talk about the E-TEC motor has been getting to me.

Thanks for your thoughts--Billy

I have twin 200 small block Etecs(2.6litre) and whilst I have only about 30 hours on each, so far I am delighted. Possibly not as quiet at idle as the 4s, at least as quiet at cruise and great sound when really opened. Fuel economy is pretty good 2.5+mpg at 34 mph on a 25ft 6000lb+ boat, instant start, ZERO and I really mean zero fumes (really noticeable difference when trolling), oil consumption minimal, and they start on the first turn. More important than all this though is the torque and getting up on the plane is such a different event from the 4s. Throttle application at any revs turns a cruiser in a sports boat. Right now, if I had the choice again, I would re rig with the same motors in a heart beat. I also much prefer the styling and colouring against the somewhat dull blocky Yamahas.

If you hunt around, they should not cost you any more.

Difficult decision after having Yamahas, but whatever get the motors history checked by an Etec engineer so he can download all the data regarding their past as the earlier models did have some issues, normally in the first 100 hours.

Have twin 250 eTecs. Don't want to get into one of the bigot wars with respect to who's is better. Have experience with Yamaha's on same boat, and Honda 225's. Wouldn't trade the e-Tecs for anything else. Everything pineapplepig said is true. Of course your mileage will vary with boat characteristics, etc. Mine are 2006's installed in 2005. They have been zero maintenance, and most people at the dock mention that they didn't know that Evinrude made a 250 hp four stroke because they are so quiet. Zero smoke, very little oil consumption, and a joy to winterize. They start immediately after outside winter storage as if I just shut them off. No complaints, no problems, and no hesitation to buy them again.

32k min for two new.

Controls and guages are not cheap, if you got those it would be a great deal.

The 22 is just for the engines. Was quoted another 1200.00 for controls 250 for the tacs (2) and 1200.00 for riging. total around 25K and a 4 hr trip to get her up there.

and definitely go for the "i-command digital" gauges -- super flexible, easy to use, easy to read, all the info you need, etc. etc.....

At that price, definitely buy them. Personally, I am not that excited about the 1command and I went the old fashioned route with individual gauges as I have heard of too many issues with them. If you have good local support then maybe, but my dealer was not even confident that he could fit them!

I love my small block E-TEC 200. It's powerful, fuel efficient, quiet and starts instantly, no matter what. One of the finest machines I've ever owned. I have the I-Command guages and really like them. The tan faces are a nice match for the classic desert tan interior of my Whaler.

A pair of 250s for 22k is a very good price. If you go with them, I've got a new (never used) 3 gallon oil tank kit that I'll sell for half of retail.
