I'm the new owner of a 1985 18ft Outrage. So far this site has been a great source of information and ideas on how to improve my boat. My first question to the board is in regards to a trailer. Does anybody have any recommendations about particular trailer brands or setups? Are keel rollers neccesary or is a trailer with just bunks good? Would a keel roller trailer be prefered if both types are acceptable? Thanks |

Welcome! The 18' Outrage is one of the most desirable of the classic hulls because it is versatile and very capable. As you start your research for trailers, start here: http://www.continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/trailering/ Come back here and post any additional questions you may have. Best regards! |

I do like to bash a company because of one bad experience but I have had many bad experiences with my trailer. I bought it brand new to trailer my Revenge back and forth to Florida. I bought a 7,800lb capacity trailer which is 2,000 lbs more than I need. I have had hardware break on 3 different trips. U bolts have broken twice and an 8 inch weld broke on the subframe. I have since changed all of the hardware to stainless steel and have rewelded seams that looked vulnerable. The company is not much help on the warranty. My trailer is made by Performance Trailers. While doing your research, look for a bunk trailer, you can add adjustable keel rollers if it does not have them. It is easy and inexpensive to install them. I would avoid "Performance Trailers", it has cost me many hours of my vacations. |

Mark -- I see that you are in CT and I think the ideal trailer for the variety of boat ramps we find around here is a keel roller/bunk trailer with a tilting frame. The tilt feature makes dealing with shallow ramp angles easier. I'm not sure what manufacturers offer that feature these days. Another option is to try to find a used COX trailer. These were commonly found under 1980s era Whalers around the North East. A 20 year old COX trailer (there are still a bunch around) that was taken care of is probably a better trailer than what you can buy new these days. |

Concur with Peter. Our 1984 Montauk came with an EZ loader trailer with both bunks and a few keel rollers with a tilt feauture. The trailer was not "undersized"...it seems new boats sold the dealer frequently sticks a cheap trailer at the minimum specs underneath to make a lower cost and higher profit. After five years, you will be looking to buy a whole new trailer. Very appropriate discussion now with Boat Show season underway. |
