Finally put my [Boston Whaler OFFSHORE 27 with Twin Yamaha 250-HP motors] in the water yesterday after some much needed [preventative maintenance] on the motors. I have to say 52-MPH was more than I expected. I didn't think a 27-foot Boston Whaler boat could be that fast. The fuel management system was laughing hard at me, but it was fun. [Solicits other owners of OFFSHORE 27 models to post their boat speeds]. I can't seem to get more than 5,100-RPM. The cruise is pretty good: 38-MPH at 3,800-RPM.

52 MPH at 5,100 RPM in an Offshore 27? That's pretty astounding, I think. Are you dead sure you were not reading kilometers per hour? Was the reading from your GPS (speed over ground), or possibly from a pitot tube or paddle wheel that is out of calibration somehow?

Kingfish,

I am amazed myself, I did get the reading off of the paddlewheel initally and didn't believe it. I switched my GPS from knots to MPH and what do you know, paddlewheel was right, exactly 52-MPH on both instruments. Three guys and 250 gallons of fuel. Cool. Anyways, had to tell someone.

Thanks Rob-

I see why you are excited - I would be too. I can imagine the great sucking sound of the fuel disappearing at WOT!!

Have you got any photos of your rig to link? The Offshore 27 is my idea of the absolutely ultimate Whaler-

Sounds about right. I see a WOT speed of 45 MPH on my bottom painted 27 Whaler WD twin 225s with about 250 gallons of fuel on board. The Offshore doesn't have the extra drag of the Whaler Drive.

I wish I knew how to post the pics. Here is a link to a page that has a lot of my boat just before I bought it.

I believe that boat was featured in CETACEA several years ago.

Jim,

I did purchase this boat from a fellow CW member several weeks ago. Great guy and of all places, Nova Scotia, Canada. One of the most hospitable places I have visited. Good story behind it actually but that is for another time.
This boat IS featured in your CETACEA secion but it had Twin johnson 150s at that time. The boat is in fantastic condition and I am sure it will be with me for a very long time.
Jimh, there are a couple of things I would like to speak to. First, I thought everyone knew what PM (preventative Maintenence) was. Second, after watching at times, some members whine about the editing that goes on (I'd rather call it correcting), I am happy to be part of the club... Cool.

If you were going to search for articles on preventive maintenance, would you search for "PM" or for "preventive maintenance"?

I thought everyone knew that PM means Phase Modulation, Post Meridian, Prime Minister, Pre-Menstrual, Postmortem, and 150 other common things.

I just noticed that you're from Florida. I think the was originally from there, too. That is quite a trip--Florida-Nova Scotia-Florida--for the boat to make!

The OFFSHORE 27 is, in my opinion, the ultimate Boston Whaler. I'd love a ride someday.

I though you just had a pet peeve for puncuation Jimh, but I see website efficincy is your goal (I should have known).
I flew to N.S. to see the boat and the owner trailered it down to Miami for me (thank god). The truth is, even for the best deal I know I would not have made that drive towing the boat. It makes me nervous now just towing the two miles to the marina here.
By the way if someday ever arrives, I would be happy to put you on the fish.

The word "boat" was there when I wrote that article. I think someone edited it out. You can't trust what you read on here.

Hi Guys.....I am the previous owner of Rob's new toy. He sure got a great boat. I would argue that there is not a 27 in existance that is in the condition that this boat is.
Rob, 5100 RPM sounds about right. You could get the max RPM's out of her if you changed the props but i decided to swing bigger wheels in order to be able to maintain a lower planning speed. You would appreciate the big proprs when you are full of fuel and ice etc. for an offshore trip....just makes for a much better handling ride when fully loaded.
I think I am missing the old girl now...LOL

Hey Scott,

Funny meeting you here, I dont anticipate running WOT very often anyways. The bigger wheels mean better cruise so that works for me. By the way Scott, If you can get some time off I have a trip to Bimini and Chub Cay booked 5/17 thru 5/20. Your welcome to fly over for a couple of days and get your hands bloody.

In a Herb Vilachaise accent: Da Link, Da Link....

I've got a Cetacea jones going on here and no one puts in the link. So, here she is on page 63, http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/images/63/5-27NS640x480.jpeg

Dat's a spicey meatball!!

Sorry for the 70's references.
