I am in the market to purchase power for my Guardian 20'. I would like to do so with a Suzuki this time around.

Would the 150 be enough or should I go with the 175? If I am not mistaken, this hull was rated for 180 HP max. Is that correct?

Where would you suggest I go for the best deal?
I don't mind travelling if necessary. Good excuse for a vacation.

Thank you,
Jason

Many here endorse Ed's Marine Superstore, good place to start:

Though I've never had a Guardian, I've had/been on 20' boats with 130-150hp and wasn't impressed. 175hp might be better...

BTW: I have a 1999 Suzuki 225 EFI w/120 hours on it (on my 21' Seaswirl Striper).... it's a awesome outboard!

Thanks, I'm using Ed's price of $10,000 on the 175 as my benchmark. It is a full days trip there and back for me. I hear the rest of the package is where they make their money. Any truth to that?

I am hoping to keep under $12K if possible. $10K installed would really be prefered.

The boat is actually going to a friend and he's the one buying the motor. I'm trying to help him get it done.

A LOT of the local watermen get their motors from ed's.

they are the cheapest in mid-atlantic region (for new motors). but, they do charge approx $1500 for installation and most dealers will only charge $1K. right now, there are some great rebates on suzuki's (through march). you won't get it rigged in one day, so plan on two trips. she told me @ least one week.

good luck!

A guy just bought a 150 in New Symrna, FL and drove down from GA to have it installed. Look for the 1999 Johnson 150 for sale and see what he paid. The 175 is usually $1000 more than the 150 so around here would be about $9500 or so just for motor. Tachs and controls can be found cheap(new) on e-bay as well. But you will probably have to buy a wiring harness from dealer and prop from Tom Clark. The rest comes with engine(or at leas with my 115) such as steering bar, gas line, prop nuts and washers, mounting bolts, etc.

I'm the guy Nick is talking about in Georgia. I just got back from trailering the Outrage to Diamond Suzuki in New Smyrna Beach, FL, and having them install a new 2006 Suzuki DF150. They are a high volume dealer and were much cheaper than the local dealers in my area.

I paid $10,039.00 for the new 2006 DF150, including 6 year warranty, installation, rigging, tach, voltmeter, stainless prop, and Florifa sales tax. This was cheaper than I found 140's listed for elsewhere. They did a great job on the installation & were fairly easy to deal with.

Here is their website, which lists their advertised "coleout" deals on 2006 leftovers. These prices do not include tach, prop, etc.

The 20" shaft 150 listed for $8450 may be the one I just bought, but I think they mayt have one other available. They also have leftover 175's.

I'll be installing the motor myself (mounted it today), so this is my bottom line.

I could arrange a similar deal if interested. The motor would have to be installed in Charleston, SC though. This could be accomplished in a day if properly arranged. Feel free to email me at yeahtoast02@yahoo.com if interested.

Hey runpasthefence, what size Outrage did you mount your motor on?

It's a 1985 18' Outrage.

I don't understand the WHY but I can appreciate the WHERE of the Suzuki motor in the Carolinas. We've been down to North Carolina and South Carolina once each, and on both trips noticed that there were more Suzuki outboad motors there than any other place we'd ever seen.

In contrast, here I am in SE Michigan, with probably half-million outboard motors surrounding me, and the number of authorized Suzuki dealers is zero.

jimh, I've been looking a bit at Suzuki’s 4 stroke 175 as well for a re-power project that I am considering. Being in SE Michigan as well, the folks at Ed’s Marine Superstore led me to the Suzuki website which has a dealer locater

http://www.suzukimarine.com/dealerlocator/marinedealerloc.jsp?

Interestingly enough, there are a few local SE Michigan dealers, one of which, Anderson Boat Sales was recently at the Detroit Boat Show. The Anderson rep. I spoke with at the show, indicated that Suzuki was one of their top three preferences in the 4stroke market, at least in the 175 – 200hp range that I am considering. While I really cant recall seeing Suzuki’s frequently locally on the water, the rep. I spoke with at Ed’s indicated that Suzuki has recently had a huge push to expand their dealer channel and has been increasingly successful in the past year.

JayR, the price that I received locally on the Suzuki 175 was almost a grand over Ed’s price and didn’t include all the gauges, install, etc.

The shop I work at during the Summer months (and frequent over the weekends) has installed at least 10 brand new Suzuki motors since the first of the year. There are 3 more sitting in their boxes waiting to be installed. I believe there are 3 300hp Suzukis on order.

Can you install a new outboard yourself and not void the warranty? I was looking at a new 70 Suzuki for my 17 montauk at the boat show and the dealer said he would not sell me a motor unless he installed it.
