Interested in putting on a transom electric trolling motor on a 17' Montauk. Any opinions as far how #'s of trust and shaft length. I will use this for trolling on freshwater lakes. Thanks

I have a 50# thrust Minn Koto on the stern of my Montauk. Not sure of shaft length. It pushes the boat nicely.

I am using a 55# thrust, 12volt, 42 inch shaft Minn Kota.I like the the longer shaft as I am usually standing while operating. It moves the boat along easily.

I have a 2005 Montauk 170, and I'd like to put an electric trolling motor on either the transom or the engine (90 hp four-stroke). I don't want to put it on the bow. Any suggestions or experience to share? Pros and cons, other than price (which is relevant, but I can sort that out). Thanks!

I have a 98 Montauk with 90 hp 2 stroke Merc, it has Minn Kota engine mount trolling motor with 55 # thrust.
It enough power except the very windy days.
I have my control at the console.

Negatives

It is better to pull the boat (motor on bow) then to push the boat (motor on stern). Better control.

Rear mounted motor can catch your trolling line if not careful.

Cannot mount engine too high on the transom or trolling motor blade will not be completely submerged.

Positives

Reliability-had mine for 8 years with one rebuilt.

Not having to going up to the bow to set the motor.

Keeps the bow area free to use cast net, etc.

Thanks, Dick. That is just the kind of information I was looking for. - Dave
