I realize that most of you have the newer, post 1982 console but was hoping to get some info on pros and cons of both? The newer consoles are available from Whaler ($900+) and I was wondering if the change in placement of the remote control made that much difference in how you handled the boat? The angle of steering is also different, more vertical on the newer console does that make a difference?

Here is a link to the older 1981 - 1982 console:

Here is a view of the newer post 1983 console:

Jim, if this should go in another discussion area, just let me know.

Kamie,

Do not confuse the 1982-1985 console with the 1986-2002 console. Though they are almost identical, Whaler realized the steep angle of the 1982-1985 console made it difficult to see the instrument panels. For 1986 they changed just the angle to rectify this problem.

The angle of this newer console more closely matched the angle of the 1978-1982 console you now have which also the same angle of the earlier original fiberglass "winged" Montauk console made from 1973-1978.

Clear as mud?

Now as to the placement of the remote control on the post 1982 consoles, I can remember seeing a new Montauk in my local dealer's showroom back in 1982 and thinking "Ah, why did they have to go mess with something that was so good?" It jut seemed weird that they changed that classic console design.

But having owned both versions, I have come to appreciate the slightly elevated position of the control. I just find it more comfortable, but then again I am 6'-2".

The angle looks much better.

If you mean Larry's Whale Lure, yes.

For a more complete explanation of the four classic standard Montauk/Outrage console designs, see Joe's excellent illustrated article here:
