I am in the process of restoring a 1972 Outrage 21 and at the point of considering engine options. I know the boat has a max rating of 200Hp and I don't want to go less than 150Hp, but I'm wondering if 150 will be enough. I plan to go with a single engine and adding a kicker later. I assume that it's a no brainer to rig for the kicker at the offset, including controls and calbes even though I may only have the single on for a while. Any thoughts/advice? |

Do a search here, there are a few threads on repowering your boat. Yes a 150 is plenty and even a 115 will do fine. |

Revenge, I would consider a 150 the max anyone would ever really need on this boat. As Judge said, there have been a number of threads on this site about repowering the boat you have, the most recent of them here: http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/005192.html Do a search to find others if you like. For most people, a 115-150hp is plenty. This boat is VERY easy to plane, with very little bow rise, so a large motor is really not needed on this boat. John |

I have been out on a OUTRAGE 21 with five adults and a large dog, powered by a 25-year-old 150-HP motor that was running on only five of its six cylinders, and in very hot tropical conditions. The boat still had ample power to get up on plane and run, and, in fact, the owner did not realize the engine was only operating at 5/6-ths capacity until some time later. Based on this, I suspect that 150-HP from a modern engine in prime condition will be plenty for most people on an OUTRAGE 21. If you want an auxiliary motor for doing a lot of trolling, consider getting an E-TEC for the main engine and not getting a kicker. The E-TEC motors have fantastic fuel economy at idle speeds, and your main engine probably would not burn much more fuel than would a small auxiliary. |

I have seen an OUTRAGE 21 with twin engine power, but I do not think there is enough room on the boat's relatively narrow transom to mount a main engine on center line and still have space for an auxiliary motor on the transom. This leaves only the choice of mounting the kicker on a bracker. Installations of auxiliary motors on brackets generally are a kludge, as you cannot get good steering linkage and other controls for the engine. |

150 HP is more than adequate. I have a 150 E-TEC on mine and it is a superb combination. |
