[Reports the following results using an Evinrude E-TEC 225-HP motor on a] 1987 OUTRAGE 22 with a super console and T-top:

19-inch VIPER 5,000-RPM WOT 42-MPH

17-inch REBEL 5,600-RPM WOT 47-MPH

Should I stick with the 17-inch propeller?

George

Looks like the 17-inch propeller works well, do you think the hole shot improved also?

I think you should stick with the 17.. 5600 rpm seems about right at WOT

Wow. I've read on this very site of an Outrage 22 with a E-TEC 225-HP spinning a 19-inch-pitch propeller last 6,000-RPM at 56-MPH. If someone would have told me your Outrage couldn't turn a 19-inch propeller I would've believed something was wrong. What were the conditions, George? Wind, seas, weight from fuel, equipment, people. Is it bottom painted? Is it mounted low? I'm very interested in this as I'm rigging an Outrage 22, too.

Thanks--Chris

Those are interesting results. Between the two I would choose the 17-inch REBEL.

I vote for the 17. Maybe the windage of the top explains the lower speeds compared to crbenny's post.

Something is not right with the setup or these numbers.

225 HP on a classic 22' Outrage should propel the boat to the low 50 MPH range at WOT without too much tweaking.

Time to investigate.

The most likely culprit is the engine mounting location/height.

Next is prop selection, though you should wait until your motor is mounted correctly before selecting a propeller.

Finally, you will need an accurate weight of the boat in question, given that slipped 22's may have gained some weight over the years.

Also - does your 22 have a 140 gallon tank?

His top speed is better than what is predicted using Crouch's formula -- 46.2 MPH -- and that prediction is with 240 HP and without the drag of a T-top. See the performance prediction table in the Reference Section. I think the numbers are right in line with predictions given that the E-TEC 225 is about 240 HP at the prop.

George -

I think you should be getting more speed with the Outrage. My 1990 Revenge 22 W/T with 2003 Merc Optimax 225 tops at 43 knots (49.5 mph) with a 19" Mirage Plus and about 5300 RPMs.

I'll be East (Laurel on the north side of Great Peconic Bay, .5 mi NE of Brushes Creek) May 23-June 13 for our older daughter's college graduation. Maybe we can get together.

George,
Unless you have changed the mounting location since the photo's were taken, you should raise the engine at least 1 hole. Once you have done that, try the props again.

George - what hole are you in - engine mounting hole, that is. 2 holes up made my 22 outrage with a single 200 merc work best.

George,

2 holes up on my Outrage 22 with an old 200 Suzuki.
