Author Topic:   E-TEC 75 and 90 Prices

I got quotes [for a new motor and its rigging] of $7,500 to $8,000 for an E-TEC 75 and quotes of $9,000 to $10,000 for an E-TEC 90. These prices seem high. Is this on target or should I look elsewhere for an engine?

Define exactly what is included in this quote.

If this includes controls, rigging (labor) and tachometer and cables and aluminum prop, it's not too far out there for this time of year and on the East Coast.

If it is motor only, no controls, no install and nothing else, then yeah, it may be a tad high...but keep in mind that there is a supply/demand thing going on with these motors. The word is that the factory is humming and production is just keeping pace with demand...giving some pricing control to dealers. I'm not seeing a lot of these motors (any) on dealer showrooms that aren't already accounted for (customer's motor or already purchased) or aren't part of a package boat deal waiting to be sold.

I just bought a 75 E-TEC about a month ago, and it was a bit more than what you were quoted. Mine came with the new style control box, a tachometer, and I'm not positive if that included installation, but I'm pretty sure it did. I'll let you know if I get another bill in the mail. So far I've paid $9,600 or so, but that included about $500 in tax. If I was ripped off, don't bother telling me, it is no use. Thanks

If you're saying these prices are high based on competition, you'd be correct, they are more expensive than others from what I hear, although I didn't shop around at all, I liked the Evinrude E-TEC from the start. I put it on a 15' Sport, and didn't want any more weight. (no 4 stroke for me)

I've only ran the engine for about 30 minutes so far, but let me tell you its much quieter than my old mercury 70, especially while running at higher RPM.

good luck

Those numbers are in line with what I paid for my 90 E-TEC that was purchased during the season. Another thing to consider is that you likely will have to pay extra for an extended warrantee (I think the offer for a free extended warrantee has expired for the season). You are actually doing better pricewise than I did, as I did not get a fresh set of controls. All in all I paid about that much for the motor, tach, keyswitch and harness, installation, extended warrantee, and tax. Like I said, I paid top dollar as I bought my motor on Labor Day weekend, but it turns out that since I ended up with a troublesome motor and the dealer knew I hadn't pushed him for a low ball figure I have received top tier service every time I have had an issue (too many times, and sure maybe I would have received great service anyways).

The numbers for the E-TEC are in line for what I paid. This included new controls, tach, installation and SS prop.

If you're talking about dropping off a Whaler at a dealer and everything is replaced, the "out the door" price would be about $1,000 higher in California.

Ed's marine superstore lists the 75 at $6800 and the 90 at $7300, engine only. Use this as a baseline for the "raw" engine price from a discount dealer. Then start adding controls, harness, tach, cables, prop and rigging labor. Add tax to that and you'll be close to the $9000 I think for the 90.

I think I ended up paying around $9000 for my 2006 E-TEC 90 last year, including 6% New Jersey sales tax. I did most of the rigging myself, let the dealer do the harness and control cable hookup to the engine, initial start up, and on water test run. I saved a couple of hours of rigging labor there. I purchased in March I think so the incentives were available (extended warranty) and it was still pre season/boat show season.

I actually could have done better price wise at another dealer but I like the guy I deal with so he got the sale, worth every extra penny I spent, I get exceptional service- tough to put a price on that.

The prices you are getting sound typical to me. You are shopping at prime time here in New Jersey, so it may be tough to find a deal.

If you can hold off until early next year you may be able to shop a better deal. And if history repeats itself, there may be some rebates or the 7 year warranty to enhance the deal.

Those prices are right for the motor rigged by a dealer. The varibles are use or not to reuse the old control key switch and cables and gauges. Plus the prop as stated above.

Yup you guys got it, those quotes were with rigging. Rigging was estimated at another 1500-2000 once all was said and done. Just seemed very high to me because I was comparing it to places like edsmainesuperstore-

Rtk- Care to share where in NJ you got your outboard? I am around the LBI area so I have checked with this areas dealers-

I MAY try and hold out until the end of the season but that is ALWAYS the case with this boat, I feel if I don't just bite the bullet I may be waiting till doomsday

Fuller's Marine in Bayville on Route 9 is who I purchased the E-TEC from. I also purchased my 2003 Mercury 250EFI and the 2005 Mercury ProKicker 9.9 from them. George and Debbie Fuller run an honest business, give excellent service, are straight shooters and just down right good people. If you do contact them please tell them Rich Kenny said hi.

A bit closer to you is a great sponsor of Barnegat Fishin' Hole, the premier fishing website for the Barnegat Bay area.

AquaMarine is very highly regarded by many on the Fishin' Hole for good service.

I paid 8600.00 + Tax for my 2006 90 ETEC from Barnacle Bills Marine in Delmont NJ. This included all rigging (controls/cables)and system check tach, alum prop, 7 year warranty.

He also installed my CMC bracket for the same $. I did upgrade to a SS prop and the cost of the Alum prop was credited towards my ss prop. I don't know what the 2007 price is but if you are in NJ you should call him (Joe). He is the #1 rated OMC dealer in the tri state area and a great guy to boot.

Since you are repowering with an Etec you should consider putting a bracket on the boat at the same time. Several folks here run their Montauks that way; I wish I had gone that route also for the couple of inches I might gain in shallow water. A bracket shouldn't add much to the overall cost and it might be easier to absorb the extra expense up front instead of re-rigging it later.

I've have seen you over there NJFly- took the opportunity to give the site a plug, good group of people.

I agree, a setback bracket is a great addition to a 17. I used the CMC ML-65 for my installation. What's another $225 bucks when your spending 9-10k.

Never thought about a bracket, I will call around to see what that would cost after parts and labor, or just install one myself before sending the boat in for rigging-

Rich says: "I actually could have done better price wise at another dealer but I like the guy I deal with so he got the sale, worth every extra penny I spent, I get exceptional service- tough to put a price on that."

Would that every businessperson have that statement cast in bronze and placed prominently in his/her establishment, especially small boat/outboard motor dealers.

I almost always use a small but well-stocked hardware store rather than getting lost and ignored at a nearby Home Depot, just for those all-important reasons--I like the staff, they're knowledgeable, friendly and helpful (even when I'm only buying two stainless bolts, two stainless nuts, and two stainless washers, like the other day), and their prices aren't really that much higher, all things (like shipping) considered.

I've had good luck with our local outboard motor dealership as well. The owner is tough as nails in certain ways, grumpy if he thinks you're just wasting time or jackin' him around, but he's a fishing/boating addict himself, knows the local conditions well and gives good advice freely, has a skilled, friendly and informative mechanic on staff, and unlike my experiences at the large-scale northern California Whaler dealership, I feel appreciated by the small dealer for bringing my business his way. I've bought three new motors from him over the past five years, and sold him two boats and three motors. He's made some bucks off my business, that's for sure, but I really don't think I would have saved all that much in the end by buying online and hassling installation and warranty matters.

BTW- Found a left over 2005 75hp E-tec for $8000 + tax, but i'm starting to lean towards the 70hp suzuki because of the gimmes Six deal until may 31st (6 year warrantee) boat is gonna get an engine in two weeks no matter what, just gotta be a man and make the call.....

Unless that 8000 plus tax includes all your rigging I wouldn't do it. That motor should run you about 6000 dollars(motor only).
