I am the new owner of a 2005 130 Sport with a 40-HP four-stroke EFI motor. The motor never starts on the first turn of the ignition, but always starts on the second. I squeeze the gas bulb before I attempt either start.

The shift and throttle cables are a bit stiff and there is a long throw from idle to the first increase in RPM, a kind of a dead zone on the throttle cable.

What is the recommended hours for changing out the plugs and will that help the engine start on the first try?

Is there an adjustment on the throttle cable to make it more responsive?

Is there a lubrication process for the cables?

Does anyone make an aftermarket shift and throttle mechanism for the 40HP EFI that is more responsive?

Thanks for any help!

What brand of motor and throttle and shift controls do you have?

If the boat is only two years old, should not be the cable,(could use some grease)Yes you can grease them some. Sounds like you need a adjustment. Will not hurt to change the plugs, but the engine is fuel injected there is another problem. Sounds like the fuel is not spraying in the cylinders on the first crank...good luck

The motor is a Mercury 40 HP EFI with the standard Mercury OEM shift and throttle controls provided with new Whalers.

I have no reason to believe the original owner ever changed the spark plugs. What is the replacement interval in hours of operation for spark plugs on the newer Mercs?
