I have a a Johnson 100GT (1989). Engine fires right up but will die in neutral. If you can get it going in gear without stalling, it runs great. Any suggestions on what to look for, can the idle to be adjusted any higher.

Thanks

How does it run on the muffs? If it does not stall out of the water but does in the water it souds like an uneven compression issue.

Compression was 130 in all four.

Not a compression issue if it runs on the muffs but not in the water. Does it? If so it could be the lower crank seal. When these go bad they allow water to get into the lower cyls and she will not idle. As soon as you go to get up on plane the water is no longer near the crank seal and she will run great. This does not usually happen ovenight, it gets wose gradually and yor lower plugs would be REALLY clean.

Most likely you have a clog in your idle circuits so remove carbs and clean them out. Then you may want to have the butterflies synchronized by a mechanic only if you mess with them which I do not recommend. If you have done so already, then have it synch & linked after you clean them. The deal with the butterflies is OMC does not have an idle jets like most cabs. The butterflies which look like chokes are NOT chokes, choking is done with an enrichening system that shoots gas into engine. These butterflies close at an idle to restrict air and gas and in a sense choke the engine. When engine is choked only a tiny bit gets trough the idle circuits which are small and clog easy. To clean you must remove starter and then carbs.

Before you get involved, check all your fuel lines and connections, sucking in air will do VERY bad thigs as well. I would also try fresh gas or a seperate tank, could have some water in it. I would also try fresh plugs and fule filters....never hurts.

Have not tried to run on muffs yet.

Old fuel is not an issue.

Have not cleaned carb or removed them. Never have (me) worked on the engine, would like to try to learn more. This is still new to me (boating). How difficult is it to remove the carbs to clean?

Have read other post about the trim having some effects on idle. I have always had the trim all the way down when stoped. Can this have an effect?

One other question, remember I'm a newbe at this, I seem to always over squeeze the primer bulb till gas starts dripping out from under the cowling. How do you know when to stop sqeezing? I am priming at the top of the ramp with the engine still tilted up.

Sounds like you need a carb overhaul, fuel should not leak out of carbs when you pump the ball. When the bowls fill up the floats rise and close the fuel flow to the carbs. The needle and seats are in need of replacement or the floats need to be adjusted or replaced. Either way I would not tackle the job yourself if your not mechanicly inclined, a mistake could cost you your motor. I would guess that you will be looking at a 300-400 dollar bill for the rebuild and sync and link as mentioned above.

I agree but check where the leak is coming from first(You must remove the hood). Squeeze ball and look where it is leaking from, might just nbe a bad line or connection. Shady mechanic will replace a fuel line and charge you $300 for rebuilding carbs if he knows you are a newbie.

Thanks for all the replies.

Thought I'd start with changing the fuel filter, plugs and check all connection. Pulled the plugs and they were all oily. Could this be a cause of the problem?

JUST HAD SAME PROBLEM WITH 90 HP JOHNSON ON MY MONTAUK WHEN I PUT NEW SPARK PLUGS IN. STALLED WHEN I WENT TO SHIFT OR IN NEUTRAL. PUT OLD PLUGS BACK IN AND PROBLEM WENT AWAY. I KNOW THAT IS NOT ALWATS THE SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM BUT A QUICK, CHEAP THING TO TRY.
