I just found this site, and have already obtained a lot of information. I recently bought a boat with a Johnson Stinger 65, looper. I was told it had a water jacket leak, which I verified when the guy started it up for me. It seemed to run fine on muffs, started right up. I took it in to a mechanic to have the jacket replaced. A test revealed the top cylinder was low on compression. The compression readings were 60-, 120-, and 120-PSI. The seller told me he recently paid to have the motor decarbonized. Could the water leak be related to this low cylinder reading? Could it be just a blown head gasket? Or far worse? Any direction or help would be appreciated. Thanks, modelaviator

Yes, aviator, it could be a head gasket and it could be related to the water leak.

Good luck. :)

If the low compression in one cylinder is due to a failed head gasket, you ought to see some signs of the presence of water in the cylinder. This usually gives the spark plug a very clean appearance.

Pull the head, if water is leaking past the head gasket you can usually see where. The plug is the suspect cylinder will also be clean steam cleaned by the water. By pulling the head you can also check the cylinder walls for wear and inspect the pistons.
