I'm looking at a 2003 Sport 150 with Mercury 60HP 2 - Stroke in great shape at a very good price. Question is what kind of performance difference will there be with the 2 - Stroke vs the 60HP Bigfoot that comes standard now on the 150?

the four stroke bigfoot would most likely be more fuel efficient then the 2 stroke.

I was wondering if you would notice a better time to plane and topend with the 2 stroke 60 over the 4, and if the weight savings , ~45 lbs, makes any difference.

It's been a long time since we had a discussion about this, but if I recall correctly, the 2-stroke was about 2 mph faster, i.e. 37 vs 35 and would get 30-35 miles per 6 gallon tank, where the 4-stroke would run over 50 miles.

Perhaps tombro will see this and correct anything I got wrong. He had the 2-stroke, I had the 4.

The deal I'm looking at is:
2003 Sport 150, Comfort Package, Swim Step
2003 Mercury Classic 60 2 Stroke w/200 Hours
2003 BW Trailer
$10,000

The best price I've been able to find with Mercury 60 4 Stroke used would be an 2003 for $14,100 (Same Configuration)

The BW Performance Spec sheet shows the 60 4 Stroke to plane in 5.2 seconds with a top speed of 35.3MPH at 6200RPMS turning a 13-3/8 x 14 Vengeance prop. I have not been able to find the same type of data for the 2 Stroke.

From everything I've been able to research it seems $10,000 for the 2 Stroke configuration is a pretty good price.

Does anybody have some suggestions of which SS prop would be best with the 2 Stoke 60?

What Moe said. I had the aluminum prop, which performed fine for my interests.

I have the same year and 60 two stroke and had good success with the Aluminum 10x13 3 blade prop. I also have a 4 blade Trophy Sport 10x12 which works well also.

Fuel is a very minor cost in a boat this small I wouldn't be to concerned about this difference between engines. The two stroke with a small foot would be my choice since the bigfoots have clunking issues when shifting.

Steve,
Do you notice better hole shot and more control with the 4 blade? I've ben think of going with the same prop. Did you lose topend with the 4?

Much better control at low speeds, better reverse thrust and less top end speed dropped about 3 mph. Big improvement in lower speed planing. The 4 blade Trophy Sport with 12" pitch loads the engine about the same as the Black Max with 13" pitch. On my boat at 4200 ft elevation they both run about 5250 rpm. The 4 blade WOT is 5250 and 31 mph the 3 blade is 5250 and 34 mph. The holeshot is better with the 4 blade.

Best price I have found was at Iboats for $279.95
