Are there any legal performance enhancements that can be performed on my new Mercury 90 hp FourStroke EFI?

Can I bolt on a supercharger? :-)

Exhaust system?

Air filter?

I'm taking my 170 Montauk into the shop next Wednesday.

Thanks,

Warren

You could carefully study the parts breakdown for your 90 vs. the 115 and then convert your 90 to a 115 :)
But most likely making sure your boat and engine "setup" is maximised for performance will yield the most cost effective results.
Due to emission regulations these days technically we can't play with anything that alters emissions for the worse. Will there ever be a market for performance aftermarket 4 stroke outboard parts? I kind of doubt it because it is such a limited market.

Hey Warren, I make the folowing statement knowing the type of offshore boating you do from your previous posts.

I reason you could potentially get the extra performance you are looking for by trying a Trophy Plus 17P prop. You will likely remember many of prop posts over the last year where I said it was fairly close to perfect for me and my boating style but not perfect. I am betting it may be perfect for you since you have a bit lower gearing than my 115efi. If I was running empty with no bimini, the prop would allow me to hit 6K rpm. Since I run heavy and use the bimini, about 5,600rpm is all I see. You have more gear than me and a very strong 90hp platform. I'll bet you see 6K even loaded heavy with this prop. Plus you'll have all the benefit of better low to mid range performance amd the natural lift it gives.

I just can't see the Laser II being the "optimum" offshore prop for your boating style. Just a thought.

Unfortunately, there is no easy and cheap way to get so much more power from your 90hp that you can feel the difference. Most likely it is cheaper to sell your 90hp motor and buy a new and more powerfull one.

But if money does not matter and you are willing to accept a risk about really unreliable engine with huge gas consumption, then go ahead and bolt a superchager to your naturally aspirated 90hp.

Thanks guys, it looks like there is no easy upgrade that I'm missing.

Bigjohn1, I think you're right about the prop. My Laser II 20 is more of a speed prop. It gets my Montauk up to 43 mph which is plenty fast for the 170 Montauk.

In fact I have a brand new one that is going to get installed Wednesday along with a Flo-Torg III. My current Laser II 20 is off balanced. And has been machined down to a 19 pitch. I think the new 90 Veradito can actually spin a 21 or 22 Laser II on a lightly load 170 Montauk to 6000 rpm.

When I go in the ocean I strip my boat of the electric trolling motor, pedestal seat and live well otherwise it would probably shear off the boat. (It's not unusual for me to get bruised from bashing into my steering wheel after a day out north of Bodega Bay.) So I'm not that heavy, but I do have the kicker.

My son takes the 170 Montauk bass fishing and likes the ability to go as fast as possible to various fishing holes. So I'll leave the Laser II on for him. :-O

I may try a Trophy Plus for ocean use only. The Laser II actually works pretty well out in the ocean too because the outboard has plenty of grunt.

Warren
