I have a 1987 Montauk and would like to buy a new 90-HP. What is your suggestion about which motor? Where can I get a good price? Do I need a 20-inch shaft motor or a longer shaft motor? I am not too knowledgeable. Thanks for help, Ted

Start here:

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/16-17/repower.html

and follow all the links given. There are also many, many prior discussions on the topic of re-powering a Montauk. A 90-HP is a good choice. I generally do not make direct recommendations for a particular model or brand, but I have to say that based on the choices made by many others and reported here, I think the front runners for re-power of a Montauk with 90-HP must be:

--Evinrude E-TEC 90-HP

--Honda BF90D

You can find out what shaft length is needed from the listing of dimensions and specifications in the REFERENCE article about the 17-foot hull. See:

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/16-17/

The website provides a great deal of information other than these discussions, and I recommend you browse through the REFERENCE section.

and other areas of the website.

Investing in a new motor will be expensive, and I recommend you find a good local dealer who will be able to provide installation and support for your new motor. The choice of brand will probably be heavily influenced by your local dealers and the support they can provide.

Thanks, I have begun to read that section.

I have a local Basspro shop. They give a good discount on Mercury motors and have a shop to service your motor. I wonder if any have experience dealing with Basspro Shop and the purchase of a motor.

Mercury makes three 90-HP motors: an old classic two-stroke, a low-emission two-stroke, and a four-stroke. I have listed them in the order of their original design and manufacture, and also in price.

The 90-HP ELPTO two-stroke carburetor motor has been around for ages. It is not very expensive. It has all the features of a classic two-stroke, as well as all the problems and limitations of a classic two-stroke. There are many Boston Whaler Montauk and other 17-foot models with these motors on the transom

The 90-HP OptiMax is really a de-tuned 115-HP motor. It has lots of displacement and power. I don't know if these OptiMax motors have received any of the GEN2 improvements that have been applied to the higher power OptiMax motors. I don't recall many reports of the 90-HP OptiMax on a Montauk.

The 90-HP "FourStroke EFI" which we often also call the "L4NA" or the "Veradito" or "Le Verado Petit" is a new motor which also is rather large and heavy. I do not believe anyone has re-powered their Montauk with this motor.

Bass Pro Shop's are probably one of Mercury's best customers, so they probably have attractive pricing. It is impossible to assess the competence of their rigging department. That varies with the individual dealer. I'd get a referral to other customers who had a motor installed by that dealer. Almost all outboard have three year warranty coverage, so if you have a problem you will be protected. However, getting a motor installed and rigged correctly the first time will avoid many problems.

You have not mentioned what the boat's current motor is. What brand and model do you have now? Often you can make use of existing components in the rigging, like the controls, the wiring harness, the gauges, the alarms, and so on, and this will reduce the cost of a new installation.
