I have twin 2000 200-HP FICHTS. I removed the engine cowling the other day after a season of fishing and noticed oil laying in the bottom of the motor housing and a film all over everything else. The boat sits is a slip with the engines tilted completely out of the water.

Is this oil draining from the throttle bodies while in the up position? No lines appear to be broken or cracked.

It's normal for some oil to accumulate in the air box and then leak out of the air box when the motors are tilted up. Some folks have laid a diaper in the lower pan under the air box to soak up the oil and then change out the diaper when its no longer doing its job.

I'm not sure what you mean by a film over everything else.

Thank, Peter. Great suggestion about the diaper.

The "film" I am referring is the light coat or layer of oil all over the engine. I am concerned that it may penetrate or seep into vital electrical parts and cause damage?

Is the film all over the inside of the cowling as well? If not, I'm guessing that someone has sprayed the motor with a corrosion inhibiter.

No, not all over the inside of the cowling. And no corrosion inhibitor was sprayed on any of the components. The engines were not in this condition the last time they were serviced.

What would be the best way to clean the engines?

WD-40 can be very effective as a solvent for removing oil-based residue.

If it is both engines then I would NOT beconcerned. If only one engine then something obviously is wrong.
