I have a 1970 NAUSET 16 that I [plan] to repower. I'm interested in any first hand experience with this hull and a Honda 50-HP four-cycle motor. From Honda's performance information, with a similar, slightly larger hull, it appears that I can cruise at 21-MPH and 3,500-RPM, and burn 1.7-GPH, which is the best fuel economy for 21-MPH of any outboard. I'm happy cruising all day at 21-MPH and saving fuel, but I'm curious if the boat will struggle to get up on a plane with a few people on board or generally feel underpowered.

Now I'm running a mid 1980's Evinrude 70 two-cycle that was rebuilt a few years ago, so maybe it's more like 80-HP now. Anyhow, just for a point of reference, I couldn't imagine wanting more power, and feel like I have plenty of power to spare. I use the boat a lot, an even though the motor is in great running order, the Honda 50 would give me 50-percent [improvement in] fuel economy and is one of the main reasons, along with noise, that I'm thinking about re-powering.

Thanks for any advice!

I have driven a few with 50's and it is the least power I would put on a 17'. My friend has a 60 Suzuki and I had a 70 Suzuki on our 17's which are heavier than yours and performance and MPG was awesome. My 70 would burn somewhere around 2 to 2.5-GPH at 25-MPH or faster cruise, so I got like 10-MPG or more. I wold seriously consider a 60 Mercury or Yamaha as well. 10-HP is a 20% gain in power.

The Honda is a good motor. I have been looking at a 60 Yamaha or Merc to hedge the horspower bet and get another cylinder. If Honda built a 60 I would have a hard time not buying one. My brother in law has a 40 and loves it.

Fuel economy with a four-cycle naturally aspirated motor should be excellent, and among that group it seems like Honda tends to be the most fuel efficient. If you want the boat to easily plane with several people onboard and with a heavy load, you will have to select the appropriate propeller. You won't have a great deal of reserve power to draw on with just a 50-HP motor.

Hi,

My Nauset with 50 E-Tec gets up on plane and cruises comfortably with four adults, 12 gallons of gas, and some gear. She has some water in her too. It's propped 'low', but still gets into the specified high rpm range.

The only time I wished for more power was when I took 5 adults, two kids, a dog and a bunch of stuff out for a picnic. We had to slow to idle over and over again while crossing big wakes and she dragged a bit.

A tank of gas lasts a while, it feels good to not dump emissions into our beautiful river.
