There's a pretty good looking [1984 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 25 Cuddy] on Yachtworld that has been repowered--looks like it had the Seadrive previously--with a single 225 on a Gill bracket. Is that way underpowered for this boat? Any idea how well such a motor would work on this boat? I'm 3,000 miles away, and can't exactly ask for a sea trial, but the model is right for me if the power is OK.
Thanks,

David

A couple of years ago I met a fellow with a REVENGE 25, a boat somewhat similar to an OUTRAGE 25 Cuddy, and it was powered with a single 250-HP Yamaha. The boat had a tuna tower on it, and it was loaded down with people. I thought, wow, that boat needs more power. But it turned out the guy had been running it successfully for a long time with that single engine.

I think an OUTRAGE 25 Cuddy with a single 225-HP engine on a set back bracket will be able to get on plane and run, but you are going to be running that 225-HP throttle rather open.

You could acquire the boat, see how it works, and, if you decided it needed more power, you'd be all set for one of those 300-HP motors now on the market.

Gotta ask a few questions.
What do you want to do with the boat?

If you often carry more than 4 large adults with lots of gear, and lots of fuel (it holds 140 gallons) then the 225 will be marginal.

Are you using it as a ski boat?
Again, marginal.

I had the 25 Revenge Walk-thru with a 250 Yamaha 2-stroke.
Top speed 41-42 mph.
Comfortable cruise 23-28 mph.
I never needed more power even skiing or tubing.
It did pretty darn good even with 6 adults, but if I were to constatnly carry that much weight a 300 (max rating)would be desirable.

I thought it was a great power combo. With just 25 hp less that I think you'll be fine with normal loads and use.

Thanks, Jim and Macfam,
The boat would be used for fishing and cruising off the Oregon coast.Would only be two or three people.

Obviously it's pretty geographically undesireable, but the motor is nearly new and the owner's description is that the hull is unusually well preserved.

The DFI Evinrude 225 is a strong motor. I have two 2002 model year 225s on my 27 Whaler WD. One of them alone will put it on plane.

I have read accounts reporting that they are close to 240 HP at the propshaft. I don't think it would have much difficulty pushing a 25 Outrage Cuddy to speeds in excess of 40 MPH particularly when mounted on a bracket. It should provide for a nice cruise somewhere between 25 to 30 MPH at 4000 RPM consuming between 10 and 11 GPH.

Being a DFI 2-stroke, the motor is stingy on fuel and oil. The motor specific sparkplugs are relatively expensive compared to the plugs for carbureted motors but you can get 100 hours out of them if they are regapped at approximately 50 hours or so (sooner if you troll alot, later if you run at cruise speeds). They are pretty easy to work on for basic maintenance.

The nice thing as a buyer is that the prior OMC Ficht reputation causes the resale prices to be somewhat depressed on the BRP built motors and these motors have shown over time to be pretty solid citizens. I have had very good experiences with mine and would buy them again if they were still made. I wouldn't have any hesitations on that motor if it checks out OK by a qualified technician.

David,

Take a look at my boat on page 59 of CETACEA. Single 225 on a bracket and gets 40mph all day fully loaded. If you are in the market for something similar, send me an email as I will be selling this boat soon. If you end up going with a similar 25' Outrage Cuddy, a single 225 or bigger will be fine for your needs.

Andy
