Yamaha has introduced a new F225 currently in a 20 inch shaft called the "sport model"

Here is the link
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/products/subcathome/88/home.aspx

It has variable cam timing, first for the 225 series. The older F225, from what I have read and heard, has a great reliability record, but alittle lackluster on the performance end.

The Yamaha F250 has had variable cam timing and is said to perform better in it class while the F225 has languished without that added technology.

What is interesting is that this new update is available only in the 20 inch shaft "sport" model and the "Performance Series" in the 25 inch shaft is unchanged without the update

Here is the link to the "Performance Series" 25 inch shaft for comparison

The new 20-inch shaft sport model from Yamaha is their 4-cycle answer to the high performance 225's from Merc and Evinrude. It is basically their F250 powerhead mated to a 20" midsection so it can be near the top of the 10% horsepower limit.

Suzuki just came out with a SS 20-inch giant so I guess Yamaha wanted to equal them as well and get some of the bass and flats boat market.

You are right. Suzuki is now offering a 250 SS ("hot rod motor") in a 20 inch shaft. Yamaha chose to do offer their 225 "sport" model with variable cam timing only in a 225 with the 20-inch shaft. I guess Suzuki is playing the "one up" game. It seems that the bass boat market has been a safe haven for two-cycle DFI motors. Not any longer
