Hey guys I own a 96' Dauntless 15 with a 90 HP Yamaha. I just wanted to post some performance numbers so that anyone with a Dauntless would have an idea on what their boat would do if they did this upgrade.

2 people on board, less than 5 knots wind:

RPMS

3500= 28 MPH
4000= 33 MPH
4200= 35 MPH
4500= 38 MPH
5000= 42 MPH
5500= 45.8 MPH

I used to have a 70 Yamaha on it and it did 35-36 mph WOT with one person. This has been the best upgrade I have ever done to the boat and would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed -

Nice numbers.

Is the engine a 2 cycle or 4? I recall the Yamaha 2 cycle, 90 hp has a redline of 5500 but the 90 hp, 4 cycle is 6000. If you have a 4 cycle,you may be able to get a bit more out of her. Either way, that is FAST!

What prop are you running (for others to know)?

It's got to be a 2 stroke Yamaha 90 because the 4 stroke Yamaha 90 would be way to heavy for the 15 Dauntless.

Hey guys the motor is a 2 stroke. As mentioned the general consensus was that the four stroke would have been too heavy. I am running a 13.25x 17 pitch SOLAS stainless steel propeller. It happens to be the same prop that was on it before. I never guessed it would ahve been the best fit but the different gear reductions between the 70 and the 90's lower unit made using the SOLAS possible.

That solas must really be baout a 20" pitch because my 90 Yamaha at 5500 would only do 41.5 with an OEM 13x17 SS prop.

No its definitely a 17. I did prop testing with 3 different turbo props and the SOLAS was the best performing. I have owned that prop for over 3 years. 45.8 is the best I have seen yet. It averages 42-43 top speed. I have the motor mounted on the highest setting it can possibly go.

Hey...Yamaha has not used engine year designations for a while so yours can not be a 2008 per say. Out of curiosity, what is the manufacturing date on it and did your dealer actually say it is a 2008 in writing? Jimh is gonna love this if they did.

Tosghib you are right about the year. It is in fact a 2007 model year. This was a typo in the original post. I bought it as a leftover 07. However I am under the understanding that there are 08's being produced.

Oh yes they are being produced but just like Mercury, they stopped using model year designations in 2006 and I think. So if the engine is made in 2005, they can still "theoretically call it a 2008 or equiv.
