I believe I have read most of the threads posted here [on re-powering a classic Boston Whaler MONTAUK 17]. In February, 2008 is it still the consensus that a 70-HP Suzuki is the best four-cycle motor to put on this boat? TY

I don't remember that consensus in any thread. I think you have several other real good options.

What is the general intended use or conditions for your boat?

Yes [the 70-HP Suzuki] is [the best four-cycle motor for re-powering a MONTAUK 17], but don't believe me even though I pioneered the 70-HP Suzuki on a Montauk. By far the best bang for the buck as long as water skiing is not your priority. 2-2.5gph at cruise and 39mph WOT is not shabby! One guy here will dispute the fact but I think he got a lemon because nobody else is disputing it. Sure...go ahead and spend $2k+ more for an E-TEC 90 to get 41+mph....not the best bang for your buck in my opinion.

Mercury 60 FourStroke four-cycle EFI, 268-lbs, $4,400 BassPro new-last year's model, 8-MPG cruising speed 37 MPH WOT

I am not sure where you got your conclusion. From what I have read recently I would say that the consensus choice for re-powering a classic Boston Whaler was clearly a Mercury 75-HP OptiMax.

That may be true in your neck of the woods but I would be hard pressed to find an older Montauk that has been re-powered with a Mercury in this area.

More often than not, Yamaha 90 hp is what I see.

Am i missing something,,Jimh suggested a mercury and ,,what,,i have a mercury and a Johnson the Johnson is 20 years old and the Mercury is 23,,Jimh is the Mercury 75 optimax preferred by you for a reason or just general consensus from the members here

I honestly don't think there is ANYONE on CW with a 75 opti.

Again..although I did not state what Jim edited into my first post. The 70 Suzuki seems to be the best bang for he buck in 4 stroke repowers. The 90 carbed 2 strokes will be cheaper by some but burn twice the fuel and resale will be less(probably). The 60 is a great alternative but resale might suffer as some think it is underpowered. I disgree being my bud has a 79 with a 60hp Suzuki and she runs almost comparable to the 70 I had on mine. Again if waterskiing is not your everyday thing(tubing is fine, etc) nor real heavy loads, a 60-75 will usually be the best bang for the buck.

My 85' 17 Montauk had a used 2001 Johnson 90 HP 2 stroke when I bought it. Hed to rebuild the motor already, but could have been due to prior owner neglect. It couldnt have been my wife running up on all those sand bars. Well the good news is that she didnt spill her drink, not even 1 time. No go on a Johnson.

Like others have said, your use will determine which motor is best for you. If it's NOT going to be used pulling up big skiers, 2 stroke would be my call. Otherwise, get a 4 stroke. All the models are decent. Pick one with a dealer that is conveniently located and has a good service departement.

Seriously, go to the dealer check out the service departement and meet the service manager. If they are idiots (and good service not always easy to find these days), to me it doesnt matter what brand they sell.

TYPO: "If it's NOT going to be used pulling up big skiers, 2 stroke would be my call."

I meant to say if it WAS going to be used pulling up big skiers.

I have the 70hp suzuki 4 stroke on my whaler and love it. It uses half the gas as my neighbors 90hp yamaha 2stroke and suzukis over the last couple years have really built good reputations as reliable engines. Not to mention they are priced right.

I get 35mph top speed with my suzuki with a 16in stainless prop. I also don't have the setback bracket on my boat so that accounts for why some other members see better numbers.
