Hi again, I'm thinking about getting a 1993 40 hp mercury, long shaft, 4 cylinder 2 stroke oil injected motor for my 13 sport. Does anyone have this motor or a similar set up? I'm looking for a little more top end on the boat. I'm hoping for about 40mph, but I'm not sure this is a reasonable expectation for the hull design. Do you guys think that the 13's can hit 40mph with a 40hp proped correctly?

Your's is a good choice of motors for a 13' sport. I would be surprised if you can get 40mph with it. I also don't think that most people would want to go 40mph is a 13" sport. The chine walking would scare the hell out of most.Low to mid 30's mph is a great WOT speed in a 13' sport. Doug Former owner of a 13' sport (selling her was a big mistake). |

Thanks Doug. I got a line on that 40 but my 2001 merc 25 hp 2 stroke runs pretty nice. If I cant get 40 out of a 40 then I'm gonna stick with what I have. I'm gonna try a different prop to try to squeek a few more mph out of my 25. |

You can get over 40 in a 13' do you know good chiropractor? It may not be safe but boating IS the last frontier. Put a 50 on that thing if you want to do it reliably, but not without trim and tilt.len |

I wish I could afford a nice 50 to put on it, as always money is a factor. Also I would be worried about putting a 50 on a 40hp transom. I'm sure it is being done but I'm a little hesitant. I would love to get this beast to hit 40, such a good time running to fishing spots at 40 mph in a 13 foot boat! I had a 12 foot greggor with a 25 tiller and it was so fast. I was scared to run it wide open tiller and all. I could see people chuckle at me, but that changed when I as cruizn at 40 mph. Good times!!! |

Even if you could get 40 out of it you would not be able to do it for more than 1/4 mile or so. You will NEVER be able to cruise at that speed in a 13'. my 40hp with a jackplate and tilt will only do 37, to do 40 you will need more hp. |

The motor you are looking at is essentially the mercury classic 50hp rebadged as a forty horsepower. I had a 1986 example that actually said "classic 50" on the midsection and had a 40 horsepower decal on the cowl. Last year I rigged my 91 15' supersport with a 96 version of the same motor and got mid 30's without any tweaking. A great motor, it has the displacement to make an easy 40 horsepower plus at the prop and with 4 inline tiny cylinders idles super smooth. If you do a search on here you see others have had 13's rigged with the original older mercury 50 4 cylinder. I believe LHG had one on his first 13'. The 93 motor you are considering would achieve similar performance to what has been reported with the older 50hp. I think you may want to consider a 15' to run at the higher speeds you are seeking. The 13' run like that as others have said will put you on your chiropractor's Christmas card list. The 15' trimmed correctly will slice through the chop and easily and safely run at a faster clip that would wear you out on a 13' even with the same horsepower. Brian |

Hi,I have a 13SS with 40HP Yamaha 2-stroke with 10 3/4 15p blacksteel. After tuning the exhaust pipe to a 50HP one i reach 40 mph reasonably constant. I expect when the jets are changed too some time this week it will reach 42-44 mph. This however is about as fast as you want to go in a 13 ft and certainly as fast as i want to go since this is the factory tuning and no more. I might though just change the transom slightly so she gets a little setback and sits a little higher. But first wait for the weekend for a test trial with the new jets. I am utterly pleased with this boat though. She really handles well and outperforms many friends with larger motors. |

I had a 92 4 cylinder merc on my 13 foot whaler and was not entirely pleased. it weighs about 190lbs (and I weigh more) and that was a lot back there. I replaced it last year with an older (1985) johnson 35 (really 30) which weighs about 120 and I am much, much happier with it. I do a lot of tubing and skiing with my small kids. true the 40 was smoother and supposedly had more power, but it was negated by the weight and trim. |

To me the greatest advantage of more hp is the nice cruising. Sure a 30 will move the boat adequately but would you like to cruise efforlessly at 28-30 (with a 40-50 hp) versus being at or near full throttle with a 30?I older short shaft 50 Mercs were only 150 lbs in manual start configuration. Very easy to start BTW, my 6 yr old started it (warm) using 2 hands. The gas attendant kid was blown away! When you go long shaft and electric start they get a bit hefty....... |
