Hi all. I found an unused 15-HP Mercury at the dealer for very cheap. Do you all think this would be strong enough for [use on a Boston Whaler 13-foot boat which had] three adults fishing in fresh water? What about two adults on [a Boston Whaler 13-foot boat in] the San Francisco Bay or Delta? Thanks for the advice ahead of time.

5Freezy:

Simply stated, no. 20-HP is bare minimum; 40-HP is ideal, particularly given three adults on board.

I can't seem to find anything more powerful than the 18-HP Tohatsu that is tiller steer, 15 inch shaft, and either four-cycle or California approved direct-injected two-cycle. I'm not up for raising the transom.

Nissan and Tohatsu have up to 40 I think.

Yamaha made a 25 HP 4-stroke 15" shaft up until a few years ago (there may be some new old stock around) and currently makes a 20 HP 4-stroke in a 15" shaft.

15hp...2-3 adults...better get used to being off plane! a 25 will do OK with 3 adults but a 15...no dice.

Check your history here at continuous wave. One person mounted a 20 inch shaft motor on a 13 footer that required a 15 inch shaft. He actailly lives here in the san francisco bay. I put a 25 inch shaft 115 hp on my nauset. Works fine using the jackplates. 25 hp is the minimum. My father had one with at 25 some years ago and that was perfect size. I had 40 on a 13 footer some years and that was awsome. There is outboard repair shop at the old Alemeda naval base check craigslist for his add on outboards. He could have fixed my old motor instead of trying slomething differnet.

I had a 1981 13 Sport, originally with a 35 Evinrude, then a 40 Yamaha, then converted to a 50 Yamaha. Sold. Later bought a 1968 13 Sport with a 18 Tohatsu 4 stroke. Test drove it with me (185), son (50), and owner (225) who sold it to me, 1 battery, 3 gallon tank, and console steering. A little slow to plane, as to be expected, but cruised around nicely, motor humming behind. Did not have GPS, and boat is currently taken apart to be redone, but felt like an honest 20+. Did not fall off of plane during hard turns.

Hope this helps,

FISHNFF

The new 18 Tohatsu/Nissan 18 is a larger displacement now, up to 20 from 18. My 18 is the same as their 15 and 9.9.

Thanks FISHNFF for that info. Sounds like it would be okay for small lakes but not in the bay, huh?

Honestly from owning 5- 13's...a 25-30hp is perfect. I love my 40 but will repower with 25-30 4 stroke whan then the time comes.
