A Friend has AN older SPORT 15 and wants to re-power. I, of course, recommended Honda but maybe a 50-HP Honda is not enough and 75-HP is too much for a 70-year-old. [Solicits readers to share their] thoughts and other brand recommendations.

I have a 15 foot center console with an older 70 horsepower Johnson. She does fly, but she is not overpowered (70 is the max suggested). If you can, I would put a 70 horsepower on her. If given the choice between 50 and 75 horsepower, I'd go 75 unless it weighs significantly more than my older 70.It's better to have the power and not use it, than to need it and not have it! The only concern would be the weight of the motor you are considering. -k

50 Hinda will be fine and fetch high 30's. A 60 Merc/Yamaha would be better and weighs like 240lbs and should fetch low 40's. There is no current 4 stroke that is 70 hp except Suzuki and it is too heavy at 350+lbs. I would not put more than 265lbs on that transom unless you were going with a 90 E-tec or something that would fly.

I have an 1987 SSL and last fall put a 60-HP E-TEC in it. It has worked out great. Doesn't sit too low and gets about 36 mph. This was a repower from an older 70 hp E-rude. I lost a bit on the top speed, but mid 30's is fast enough. Personally I wouldn't go less than 60 hp and anything over 70 could give you insurance problems. I spoke with several dealers and none would install any motor over the max 70 hp. If you're anywhere close to central PA, let me know and I will give you the dealers name. Got a great price and a really nice rigging job.

I had a 1988 15 with a Johnson 50 and was very happy with the performance. It would do about 34-MPH with two people and fishing gear.

I used to have a SPORT 15 with a 50-HP motor. It was plenty of power.
