I'm getting ready to [buy] a new prop for our 170. Tried a LASER-II 20 yesterday and was duly impressed with the gains over our current VENGEANCE prop. With all the propellers out there, has anyone found a propeller that is a better match for the Mercury 90-HP FOURSTROKE? The LASER lowered my midrange engine speeed by 200-RPM, 30-MPH at 4,000 versus 4,200, and increased WOT from 43.4 to almost 46-MPH. Just wanna make sure I'm getting the most bang for my buck. Thanks
J

What motor do you have on your Boston Whaler 170 MONTAUK?

--90-HP Yama-Merc carburetor?

--90-HP Yama-Merc EFI?

--90-HP Veradito EFI?

There were all called "FOURSTROKE" motors.

Assuming your goal is purely top speed, you have the best prop already installed. Plenty of reports submitted to CW over the past 3-4 years confirm this.

I have an 05 Montauk with the Merc 90hp EFI 4 stroke. I've been running the Lazer 11 20 for the last year and I think the prop is the best bang for the prop. I'm also getting about 45MPH WOT on flat water

I am interested in this performance comparison. What Vengeance prop are you comparing with the Laser II ? How did it impact WOT RPMs?

2+ MPH at WOT is pretty impressive.

The prop I have now is an 18"p Vengence to which I've had some cup added. The LazerII performed across the board much better than the Vengence. Of course the Vengence is a less expensive prop and I'll keep it as a spare. Also the Torque flow hub on the Lazer reduced the gear shift "clunk" considerably. Have located a Trophy Plus for a good price and if the dealer will let me test it I'll post the results, other wise I'll be shopping for the best price on a Lazer II in 20"p.

You didn't really state how you normally load or use your boat. The Trophy Plus (which I own and have run on a 170 Montauk) will help with a heavy load and it will help with planing but it's going to be slower on the top end than that Laser-II. Since the lowest pitch it's made in is 17, you may very well rev over 6,000 with a light load. If you have the latest generation of the Merc 90 4-stroke, you can get 6,400 rpm's so the Trophy Plus test will be interesting. I'll be watching for that.

Big John
I called to check on the Trophy Plus after I had posted earlier this morning. It's gone.....$175.00 took it almost immediately. My usual load is either just me or me and another fisherman and gear, so I'm usually loaded fairly light. The Trophy was a 21"p so I have the feeling that it may have been a little tall for my boat anyway. If another chance comes along to test a 4 bladed prop I'll post the numbers. I appreciate your input.
