[I plan] to repower my 1971 OUTRAGE 21. What weight can the transom handle? The 150- to 175-HP four-cycle outboard motors all seem to be quite heavy regardless of the maker. Are heavy four-cycle outboard motors the way to go? Can the transom handle it?

[To those with experience with Nissan outboards;] there is dealer where I live and an option is to install twin 70's or 90's provided they can fit. Boat is still in winter storage so not sure if twin outbaords would even fit.

thanks

Twins would fit on that hull. The boat was designed for twin Bearcat outboards back in the day.

Yellowknife, huh?! I'm interested in the boating you have up there on Great Slave Lake - can you start another post and share some stories/experiences? I want to get up there in the next 10 years (From Chicago) with my 18' Outrage. I even have the chart to begin planning....but fuel availability seems to be a major concern/factor.

We have a 500lb 130 Honda on our 73 21 Revenge. If the transom is solid you can put most anything back there.

I have twin 75's on my 72 19 Outrage. You should be able to fit twins without issue. As for weight sorry I cannot help ya.

Nissan outboards are made my Tohatsu, and are considered extremely reliable and fuel efficient. I have a Tohatsu 90 TLDI on my Montauk and am pleased.

I have a Merc 225 Opti on my 72 and its been on for 4 years no problems..actually never have to go over 3500 rpm

weight difference between the 175 200 225 isnt any more than some gas in the tanks - gallon of gas weighs just over 6 lbs..12 gallons - ~72 lbs -

Im not saying its right but it can defiantly handle it

Twins is going to weigh a heck of a lot more than a single 4s. Try looking at Suzukis, they are about 475lbs I believe which is fine. I run a 115 Suzuki and it is about 420lbs and is still bow heavy. I would not go too crazy only reason it is a 36+ year old transom, how far do you want to push it...HP or weight?

Thanks for the replies. Is the [proper] shaft length 20- or 25-inch?

As requested by Buckda, I will post some information on boating on great slave lake on the forum.

Twenty, but if you steal a 25-inch you can just buy a $150 jackplate.

We had a Suzuki 140 four-cycle on our partnership banana Revenge 19 mounted on a simple jackplate--no problem. We've since transferred the motor to our prototype banana 21-footer, mounted the same way, and everything seems to be working out fine.

At a rendezvous a few years ago I saw an OUTRAGE 21 powered by twin 90-HP HONDA four-cycle motors. The transom weight did not appear to alter the static trim of the boat.

Now it won't afect the trim but do you want to put 800lbs on a 37+ year old transom that was designed for maybe 550-600lbs max.

I believe the transom will easily accommodate the weight of twins unless you have reason to think the integrity of said transom has been compromised.
