I'm a newcomer to my boat. I've looked for years for one I could afford, and finally found it. A 1979 MONTAUK which came with a 1984 Johnson 70. After I finish rebuilding it, the motor will be available for sale.

That motor needed so much attention, that I re-powered with a 1996 Johnson SPL 112. I realize that's slightly above the rated limit for the boat, but it was a great deal, recently rebuilt powerhead, and looks like it's been cared for.

It came with a 4-bladed composite prop in marginal condition, and I'd like to replace it with something great. I hope to use this boat for a little bit of everything - going out to Catalina for diving, fishing on lakes in the area, waterskiing, etc. If all other things were equal, I'd love the highest possible performance. But in the days of $4/gallon gas, at least here in Southern California, I'd like to find the most efficient possible prop.

Could someone lay out the reasons for 4-blade versus 3-blade propeller, and could anyone offer suggestions for a good all-around performer?

Thanks in advance,

Jay S.

Jay,

You don't want a four blade prop for your Montauk. A Stiletto Advantage I three blade will be among the very best available. I recommend the 13-1/4" x 17" size hubbed for OMC, part # 21317.

An OMC SST three-blade is a good starting point.

If going OMC SST then get the 13x19. If going with Tom's Stiletto(great price) get the 17" from him directly.

I agree, the SST would also be an excellent candidate. There are two versions, the 13" x 19" and the 13-7/8" x 19".

One is a newer design but that in no way suggests that it would automatically be superior on your boat.
