[A four-year-old discussion was revived to append these articles, but they have been moved to their own topic and thread--jimh][I] just purchased a 2008 90-HP [Evinrude E-TEC] Saltwater edition and mounted it on a Boston Whaler 17 Dauntless Boston Whaler. Only with 19 hours of running time I was denied a great day of fishing when the motor started to misfire and only was running on two of its [three] cylinders. I had to turn around and head for the harbor. Got in safely and was thankful to have gotten in. Inspected the motor and found that one of three wires that is connected to one of the coils that goes to [a] spark plug was secured near a bolt on the engines head. The wire insulation chaffed, eventually the wire made contact with the bolt and arced, then severed the wire, shutting down one of the cylinders. Also, another wire on the top of the motor is showing a little sign of chaffing. To me these are all factory defects that should not have happened. Now I have to wait it out for my dealer to figure out how he's going to repair the problem Aloha. Terry Chung

I just bought a 90 E-TEC for my 1967 Nautauk. It is a 2008 Saltwater 90 and besides some problems that I had with the dealer the motor is stellar. I did notices some vibrations at the beginning but, they have long gone away. The motor starts so fast, you just turn the key slightly and varooom. The boat has great power, I think have am running about 4800 rpms at about 37 mph. But I have not had the chance to check, and to tell you the truth have not wanted to. I just want to use the thing. I think if I switched to a 13.25 x 15 stainless steel Stiletto Advantage propeller it would be faster. But I will do that down the road. There is one annoying thing about the motor that I know most of you will think I am crazy about but, here goes. I hate the the water comes out the back of the motor. My whole life with two strokes, and all you had to do was turn around and see if the thing was peeing. But now I have to turn about and got to back and look around for that huge stream of water. Anyway, it is probably just me. But annoying.Hope this helps |

The 2008 E-TEC motors use the new inductive discharge spark coil system. I am sure when you get this little problem with wire chaffing resolved you will find that the inductive discharge ignition spark coils will provide plenty of spark and good performance. I also suspect that your dealer will probably inform the factory about this problem so that the lead dress of the wiring association with this coil can be checked during final inspection. |
