Just purchased a 1998 Montauk 17 with a 1997 Yamaha 90HP 2-stroke engine. Installed new propeller, factory 13-1/4 x 17 aluminum. Boat ran at 4900RPM WOT and 36MPH with two adults, 2 kids, full tank of gas (19 gallons) and a cooler full of lunch and drinks. Do these numbers look okay? Should this boat be running faster and higher WOT? We also cruised 42 miles over the weekend and burned 10 gallons of gas, does this seem okay as well. Thanks!

The numbers look fine. 4.2mpg isn't to shabby!

Install the appropriate stainless steel propeller and raise the motor one set of bolt holes (3/4") and you will do even better.

Just as a point of reference, I use a 13 X 19 inch stainless K series yamaha prop on my 17 BW. The prop turns the engine (90 yamaha 2 stroke) at 5200 RPM with a light load. Reads 42 mph on a gps. Will Turn 5000 with a heavier load (3 200lbs adults, 20+ gals of gas), trimmed out. Hole shot is pretty good. My engine is flush on the transom...

I use the boat for cruising, water sports, and fishing. If I were to try to pull a heavy slalom skier it would be a struggle with the 19. I would need to switch to my 17 spare. However, I did pull a 230+LBS wake boarder with not much of a struggle with the 19. I use the 19 almost exclusively.

I think you should be be able to squeeze more RPM out of your current set up. Do you have any thing else of significant weight, dual batteries, trolling motor etc... Are you trimmed out at WOT when you hit 4900?

With My 17p stainless the boat jumps on plane and will top out at 5700 RPM with 2 adults full tank trimmed out.

I am sure you have many choices.... I would stay away from props designed for a bass boat, these are designed to run close to the surface and provide significant bow lift. I tried a 19 inch Michigan Wheel Ballistic with only fair results... MAX 4900 PRM... Kind of a radical designed prop to begin with...

Good luck

My 17 OEM SS would do 5500 on the nose at 41.5mph trimmed to the hilt.

Thanks for the feedback!

I have since run the boat with two adults and hit 5100RPM and 38MPH and alone hit 5200RPM and 39MPH. Both of these were with full tanks of fuel. I still don't think I have trimmed this properly and will try again if and when the bay is flat enough to enjoy the ride at that speed!
