I purchased an Evinrude E-TEC 90 in April 2008. I mounted it on a 1966 CURRITUCK. I have been having problems with the engine making a popping noise. The popping happens around 2,500-RPM and 16-MPH when the engine speed is constant. Has anyone else had this popping noise?

The dealer has replaced all the fuel injectors and the fuel pump, and the problem still exists. Any suggestiongs would be helpful. Also, the bow of the boat rides high and there is very little to trim out before the boat starts [to go into an oscillation with the bow rising and falling]. Would lifting the engine up a few holes help this or would it be better to put on a jack plate? The anti-ventilation plate is about 2.5-inches above the keel.

I think your engine is mounted too high.

Typically, the recommended height is 1-inch to 1-1/2-inches above the bottom of the keel with the engine vertical.

What holes are the top set of bolts in (count from the top down)?

"The popping happens around 2500 rpm @ 16 mph when the rpms are at a constsnt speed"

If it is a popcorn type of sound, your throttle position sensor calibration may be off, or the motor is not propped correctly. See your dealer and ask him to reset the TPS calibration. It can be tweaked one way or another to take out or minimize the sound at the transition range.

Make sure the motor is propped for around 5,200-RPM with an average load.

It sounds like popcorn. I have a SS Viper 15-pitch prop on. I had the area rep out and he was adjusting the throttle sensor and was not able to get the popping out without putting the new injectors and fuel pump on!

Are you saying that the popping is gone now that the rep put new injectors and a fuel pump on?

If you still have the sound and your engine is turning around 5400-5500 or more with that 15" prop, put on a 17" and see if the popping goes away or reduces significantly. Those inline motors seem to run better with a good load on them.

Why would you want to run at that speed anyway. Kick it up to 3k. That slow speed is not the most efficient.

I use that slow speed to pull my 4 and 6 yr old on the wakeboard.
