I just bought a 1991 17' Montauk with a 1991 Johnson 90 hp. Engine seems in great shape, no problem starting etc. Problems though: Shudders at low speed, and after putting the throttle all the way up she runs great for a few minutes then drops down to half speed or lower on her own! Also used up almost half of a 25 gallon tank within an hour whilst drifting at next to no speed... Any ideas? I just had someone 'clean' the carbs, but I have no idea to what extent they cleaned them... If that is the likely problem I would appreciate if someone could point me in the direction of how to clean them myself....

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Choke is stuck on or partially on? Only place all that gas could be going is out the exhaust into the water.

The PERFORMANCE discussion is focused more on refinements in rigging and propellers for motors which are operating normally. For advice on how to make repairs to motors which are not operating normally, please use the REPAIRS/MODS discussion.
