Topic: Outrage 18, 130-HP

I just picked up an 1989 Outrage 18 that has [a Yamaha 130-HP motor] with a 17-inch-pitch propeller. The 130-HP Yamaha is currently turning well over 5,800-RPM, so I am thinking about a 19-inch pitch propeller or a four-blade propeller. [Seeks] suggestions [for a suitable propeller of 19-inch-pitch or four-blade construction].

Exactly what "17-inch-pitch propeller" are we talking about? There's an awful lot more to propeller selection than just the pitch and the number of blades. |

The Yamaha Painted Black Stainless Steel propellers are good propellers. The semi-cleaver design offers good stern lift which the Outrage 18 does not necessarily need but they can also be fast. Go ahead and try the 13-3/4" x 19" size and see how it does.You could also try the Yamaha Performance 3 Series (same as the Stiletto Advantage 4.75) if you wanted a bit more top speed. |

First of all, welcome to this great website, CCIM. You've got a wonderful boat there--I owned and loved 'Cetaceous', a 1988 version of the OUTRAGE 18, for almost three years and put around 760 wonderful hours on its Yamaha F115 four-cycle motor during that time. I started with a Yamaha black stainless 19P prop but was somewhat dissatisfied because I wasn't turning more than around 5,400 to 5,500-RPM wide open, though my top end was a decent 40 mph on a good day. With Tom Clark's always helpful advice and assistance, I went down two inches in pitch to a 17, stuck with the same Yami black stainless prop, and rpm increased to 58-5900, which is right about where I wanted it (top speed didn't really change at all, but the boat was marginally quicker on plane). While Yamaha wants their four stroke motors up close to 6000 rpm/WOT, I assume yours (at 130 hp) is a two stroke, and if it is already "well over 5800 rpm" I would completely agree with Tom--go ahead and see how she goes with a 19P prop. I'll bet that motor will turn it without a problem and you'll see top end speeds in the low forties.Tell us how it turns out, eh? I have a pair of Yamaha 130s on my 22.The redline for that engine is 6,000-RPM, so I would say that if you are topping out at 5,800-RPM you are pretty much in the zone. |

I thought the 130's redlined at 6,000-RPM, but I was not certain. |

If the motor in question redlines at 6000 RPM instead of 5500 RPM, then stick with a 17-ish inch pitch propeller. |
