A few years ago I had some problems with a fuel injector on my 2004 ETEC E90DSL. The top cylinder was not getting any spark, and the engine diagnostic was showing an injector failure. My mechanic replaced the entire injector after being unable to recreate the failure, under warranty, and the problem was (presumably) solved.

The problem resurfaced again at the end (thankfully) of a long week boating in Lake Tahoe. After a quick diagnostic, we determined that the problem is, and was, a faulty Deutsch connection (wire connection) that had nothing to do with the injector.

Just thought I'd update that information...still lovin' the E-TEC.

Thanks for the follow-up. We had a $150,000 stationary diesel generator set that wouldn't reliably start, and it turned out to be a bad pin in a connector. It took a long time to find that little bugger. I am glad you got the gremlin out of your E-TEC.

I have seen several bent pins in auto firewall connectors cause all kinds of problems which were hard to find.

The DEUTSCH connectors used by Bombardier are good connectors. They have a corrugated rubber seal and bayonet or snap-on retainers. My impression is they're more expensive than the connectors used in automobile applications.

Current auto connectors are much better than they used to
be. They are sealed these days, and generally a bit smaller
and lighter than the clunky ones used in the sixties.

The 3 wire E-TEC injector connection is an AMP connector. I believe the only Deutsch connectors on that motor are the boat harness hookups and the diagnostic interface port.

I'm in agreement that the Deutsch is a great connector and it is much easier to service than the AMP brand.
