I need to repower my 1973 16' Whaler Bass boat. I had a 75hp Chrysler for 20 years and it worked fine. I use my boat for fishing, usually 2 200LB+ adults, a trolling motor, 2 batteries and 12 galloms of fuel. Mostly fresh water in Minnesota, but we sometimes take it to Florida and fish inshore and reefs close to shore. I am considering a 60hp Mercury Bigfoot. Is this enough power or will I be sorry?

What do you recommend?

The Mercury 60 Bigfoot will be an excellent choice of power for that hull. It will equal or exceed the performance of your old Chrysler.

Use a 13-3/8" x 14" Mercury Vengeance propeller with it and expect to see a top speed of 30-35 MPH.

I just repowered my 16' Whaler of the same vintage with a Mercury 60 HP Bigfoot. I have reached 34mph lightly loaded with the 14 pitch Vengeance SS prop. I went with this motor mainly because I got a good deal on it. I would have preffered the 70-90 HP Yamaha two strokes or the 90 HP Mercury two stroke if you can find one. I feel that any fourstroke over 60 HP is too heavy and too pricey. Those big fourstrokes don't look right on the back of such a small boat. Etecs are okay but too pricey. With the fourstroke and EFI, I got a much cleaner and easier starting engine and sacrificed nothing but 3-10mph on my top speed.

I have the perfect engine for your 1973 Whaler, a 1974 Johnson practically brand new.
