I have a 1989 Montauk 17 with a brand new Yamaha four-cycle motor. My old motor was an 1989 80-HP Mercury outboard. Knowing that the new motor was significantly heavier I opted to move my battery forward underneath the console and added a second battery as a back up and to get some more weight forward. I also have a 22- gallon aluminum fuel tank under the RPS. My boat performs great with one exception. I have about a 5-degree list to port when loaded out how I typically have the boat when I fish. I have tried moving other things around such as tackle bags and coolers but that doesn't really fix the problem completely. I attribute the list (which wasn't there before the repower) to the additional horse power I have added. I am curious and looking for any information on adding a fixed trim tab to the port side to level the my boat back out. Any information in regard to size and exact location for mounting a trim tab would be a tremendous help. Thanks in advance for any info offered.

You could add a trim tab using a blade-type tab as seen on some of the new Boston Whaler boats. It would be smaller and easier to adjust than a conventional trim tab. You also might be able to compensate for this list with the outboard motor trim tab. |

Thanks for the in jimh. Any thoughts on size and location to mount the blade tab? I guess my starting point should be contact Boston Whaler and see what they recommend? I did adjust the motor trim tab just a hair but might need to go further. I will pursue that fix a little further before I go drilling holes in my transom. Thanks again- |
