I have a 1989 Newport 17 I want to re-power. It currently has a 1989 Evinrude 90-HP. Will the Yamaha four-cycle F60 have enough power? Should I go with a more horsepower? Will the F90 at 370-lbs be too much weight?

Thanks in advance.

F60 will fetch you low-mid 30's and will not be anywhere near as powerfull as your 90hp but it will burn about 1/3 of what you do now. The F90 is not too heavy but will cost a bunch more for a measly 5+mph at WOT.

Nick's performance estimate is right on. I got just up to 30 mph out of a 50 hp Yammi four stroke High Thrust on my old Katama, and that 60 with normal gearing should get you well into the thirties.

I'm just getting to know my new F60, by the way, on my 'new' 1987 15CC. Top end at 5800 rpm gets me 41.5 mph on that much lighter hull. Love the motor, and recently achieved 12 miles per gallon on a 36.5 mile run through the S.F. Bay.

Unless you feel you need to make your Newport go over 40mph, you will absolutely love an F60. I rigged one on our local sailing club's '87 Montauk this summer and it's be great (showing 55 hrs now). The fuel economy is fantastic and it has plenty of power. You'd have to be carrying a lot of weight or towing something big to need more power I think. If I was going to rig that hull with a Yamaha 90hp, I don't think it would be a 4-cycle, it would be the tried and true 3cyl 2-cycle.

Looking at these replies, I think I'll have to start looking for a F60.

Thanks

I have operated a Montauk powered by a Yamaha F60 (small gearcase) and it is very quiet, smooth and light weight. However, it will have to work its little heart out if you are going to do anything but operate it with a light load at minimum planing speeds.

Top speed will be the low 30s and nothing like the Evinrude 90 for acceleration or pulling power.

If you do choose the F60, I suggest you opt for the Hi-Thrust model with its larger gearcase which can swing a larger propeller.

The F90 weighs a lot for that hull but it cannot be disqualified on that basis alone. It depends on your needs.
