I'm kicking around the idea of adding a kicker motor to my 1973 Outrage 19. The transom is notched and designed for a 20 inch shaft. What is the proper shaft length for the kicker motor?

I have used a 15" on my 19 revenge but I would go with a 20" if you have the opportunity. Reverse is almost nill because the prop just pushes the water against the transom.

Tony,

What kicker are you considering??

I have had my eye on a few 9.8 and 9.9 HP four strokes. I found a Tohatsu and a Suzuki that look very nice, but they of course are pretty heavy. I think the Suzuki is close to 100 lbs although the Tohatsu is lighter.

Having just picked up my 19 Whaler a month or so ago, I finally got time to start the Evinrude and it seems to start easily, I will see how it runs and then decide on how long I will use it before repowering. While I have the old motor on the boat, I want to have a back-up kicker for emergenciues. Eventually I want to repower my old Evinrude 175 with a Suzuki 140 hp four stroke, but that is down the line, I will buy a kicker soon.

Keep us posted on what you decide.

Guys honestly on these boats do NOT worry about weight on the transom, especially a few pounds. They are so so bow heavy that it does not mean much. If you are considering a new Suzuki down the road, I suggest a new Suzuki kicker for a matched set.

PS if looking at the tohatsu/Mercury consider the 8hp as well. Same CID and weight but probably a few bucks cheaper and plenty of power for a 19'. I have pushed mine fine with a 4.5 OMC.

Actually I was thinking of getting a used Johnson or Evinrude 9.9 HP of approximately the same vintage as my 1998 Johnson Oceanrunner 150. They will last pretty much forever, from what I understand, and I think they make a 4 stroke which fits those parameters.

I had a 20" shaft kicker on my Montauk and had problems with the prop coming out of the water when trolling into 3' or larger seas. On my current 19' Whaler I bought a Yamaha T8 with the 25" shaft and have had no problems like that.
