What should the wide-open-throttle engine speed be [for a 1989 Yamaha 70-HP motor]?

Check your owner's manual in the section on SPECIFICATIONS. The maximum recommended operating speed range will be given.

Dan, The 70's WOT range is 5000-6000 RPM.

I recommend you invest in an owner's manual. The owner's manual for your outboard motor will give you a great deal of information. Owner's manual are very easy to read when on the boat. You do not need an internet connection, a browser, and a display. An owner's manual is a great resource of information about your motor, recommended procedures for operating and maintaining it, and a source of help in diagnosing problems.

I have most engine manuals from all the ones I've owned over the years.

The vast majority of the time they're a waste of the paper their printed on.

John--I have to disagree. The owner's manual of a typical motor is filled with information. The problem comes when the owner doesn't read it.

A good example is starting procedure. Every motor has its own special procedure for starting. I have learned that if you read the manual and follow the starting procedure recommended for your outboard motor, the motor will start more reliably and usually much faster than if you just start fiddling around with the controls and try to start it any which way.

There is so much information in most owner's manuals that to list it all would just be to reprint the entire owner's manual, so it is impossible for me to go on further with a list of the contents.

I agree with Jim. the owners manuals would have the engines top rpms. It would also have a lot of useful info that people here always ask about.
