I would be curious to hear from others running the Mercury Tempest Plus propeller. I purchased a set of these in 23P to try out on my twin outboard Temptation (Yamaha 250 EFI's) and was pleasantly surprised at the overall performance.

I expected the propellers to provide good top end, which they did, but also saw just about the best fuel consumption numbers of any props I have tried. My testing was done with a light load of only me and about 80-90 gallons of fuel and other standard equipment (anchor, 3 batteries, etc.) totaling approximately 6,300 lbs The results were:

Minimum Planing Speed: 15 MPH
Best Fuel Consumption: 2.0 MPG (19.6 GPH) @ 3,500 RPM/40 MPH
Maximum Speed: 61.2 MPH @ 5,400 RPM (60 GPH)

A single engine provided:

Best fuel economy of 2.5 MPG @ 4,000 RPM/35.5 MPH.
Max Speed, single motor was 44.4 @ 4,700 RPM & 1.65 MPG

In addition, throttle response was quick and the boat planed easily on a single motor. Earlier, I had a crew of 11 (6 adult size & 5 kids) on board with lots of equipment and inched up to 55 MPH with a little more throttle to go and not fully trimmed out; ride was smooth and strong. I didn't realize how fast we were going until I glanced at the GPS.

I do not have any rough water experience with the prop as of yet, but think with the ability to plane a low speeds they should handle moderate to heavy chop reasonable well.

Tempest Plus is one of Merc's fastest props, and just about owns the V-6 bass boat market. Only thing that is better is the new Fury, but not designed for offshore hulls.

I'm thinking a of trying a set on my 25 Outrage. Glad to hear they run well on a 25' hull.

Joe,

The Mercury Tempest Plus is a prop that is made for boats that exceed 50 MPH. Because of that, there is not much application among Boston Whalers. Your boat (and Larry's) are exceptions.

I actually have several Tempest Plus's in my basement including a pair of counter rotating 19" pitch that are new-in-the-box but for a test run of the right hand. I had bought them to test on my own Revenge 25 on the recommendation of Glen E's but have yet to try them out.

I already know they will not be enough pitch for my boat because I have compared them to the Revolution 4, MIRAGEplus, VenSura (Offshore) and Enertia.

It has bees said that the Tempest Plus is a three bladed version of the Revolution 4, but that is not quite true. The blade shapes are similar but the Tempest Plus has less rake and slightly less surface area on each blade. It has proven itself on offshore boats as much as bass boats.

Tom,
I have found the 23P Tempestplus run at least 200 (perhaps more) RPM faster than a 23P Mirageplus. I was only able to spin the Mirageplus about 5,100 as I recall; The Tempestplus went to 5,400.

I commented a month or so back that the blade geometry resembled that of my Yamaha Saltwater Series II 23P props. It turns out their performance was equally similar and perhaps a bit better with single engine performance as they bested my Yamaha props by 1-2 MPH in that regard. I have a CR pair of 23P Rev-4's but I don't know if I even going to waste my time trying them as I think the pitch is too much. Maybe I'll look to trade for some 21's.
