To assist Honda outboard owners that change their own oil: I noticed when I changed the oil in my Honda BF150, after I added the 7.1-Quart-US amount recommended, the amount on the dipstick was well above the upper limit mark. After running the engine I had to remove 26-ounces of oil to get down to the the recommended upper limit mark. Next oil change I will start with around 6.2-Quart-US and go from there.

I can't speak about Honda outboards, but Honda ATVs have a very specific procedure for checking oil levels. Among other things, they specify that the oil must be checked with the dipstick unscrewed and just resting on the threads.

If it is the same on the outboards, this might explain what you are seeing.

Thanks for the info, I re-read the manual and there was no mention of resting the dipstick. The Honda O/B is the same engine as the car and the dipstick does not screw in but you just push it all the way down like checking your car.
I could ask the dealer that sold it to me if he has heard of this and see what he has to say.
