Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere. I need a new motor. Am considering new 4 stoke Nissan 15hp @ 120 lbs, but found used '06 4 stroke 25hp Honda @ 155-160lb (I think.) Wonder if: #1. Will 15hp get the 13' whaler to plane? #2. Is 25hp Honda too heavy for the boat? I've been using an old 2 stroke 25 hp Mercury which will plane easy enough when I can start the thing. But it's too moody.

15 will plane it but 25 ill plane more than 1 person. Go with the Honda. I have a 240lb Suzuki 40 on mine...160 is nothin.

Thanks. Because 160lbs is 35lbs more than I weigh it sounds heavy to me. But what do I know? Not much. I'll look into it.

I did notice the Honda 25hp tiller is 160 lbs but the R/C version is 178 lbs. Not sure what setup you have.

Go for the 25HP.

Whether you refit or stay with the tiller, go for the PT&T.

An Evinrude 15 HP 2-stroke will get the 13 Whaler on plane. Don't know whether a 15 HP 4-stroke will. In this case, I would err on the side of getting the Honda 25.

Whether a Nissan 15 will plane a 13 depends entirely on who is the boat and how much they weigh. If there's just a kid, a 9.9 will plane a Sport 13.

Having said that, I would go with a 25 HP motor which is a very good match for the 13s. That amount of power will accommodate several adults.

I'd stick with the 25. I have a '92 Johnson 28SPL 2-stroke on mine and think its a good size. It will do ~30mph with just myself in it on a flat lake.

I've only had two days when I've wished I'd gotten a 40.

I once had a problem getting on a plane with that motor. With five adults, two full 6-gallon gas tanks, and deep cycle battery into 3' rollers and a 10-15kt headwind it just wouldn't plane. After burning 5 gallons of gas and turning around with a tail wind/waves, the return trip took 1/4 the time.

When pulling a rather large person on a tube, I could only get on plane by using one tow eye and circling with the tuber on the inside of the circle.

The main problem with the 28spl was prop design and choices. Great engine but 1950's lower unit. Newer 25's will conquer many of those problems.
