[My question is this,] can I use XD100 oil in my 1991 Evinrude 70-HP model E70TLEIE without making or having any settings changed? I am asking this after reading about the E-TEC motor's engine management module having to be reset.

Yes.

Your 1991 Evinrude motor does not have an engine management module which is run by a microprocessor and uses stored algorithms to control its execution. The rate of oil use in your 1991 Evinrude motor is controlled by the design of the oil mixing system pump (often called the VRO pump).

Thank you Peter and jimh, So I am assuming all I have to do is simply just change my oil to XD100 and its as simple as that correct?

Larry

Bigs is right I just switched to XD-50 in my 1989 Evinrude 225 and the smoke at start up is reduced to almost nil. I was impressed with how much of a difference it made to my 20 year old motor. I also think that XD-100 oil is not for premixing, which is what the VRO pump does. I believe that the E-TEC motors inject the oil directly onto the internal parts undiluted.

XD50 oil is recommended for applications that require TCW3 oil.

XD100 is recommended for direct-injection two-cycle engines.

I use the XD50 in all my engines. You will like it.
Almost No smoke in my 1972 6hp kicker on the 15'.
Obviously no smoke at all in the E-TEC!

Thanks everybody.I just bought this pontoon 20 ft boat and the 1991 70 hp Evinrude that came with it and I wanted to start off right with it. Kind of a neat old boat, 1987 riviera. I added marine stabil to new gas in it and XD50 for the new oil in it. Now I am ready to fish or pleasure with my grand children. It has a drop down bow mount electric trolling motor minn kota 65 thrust and a live well in it. It is good for both fishing and leisure.

Thank you guys for this forum and your expertise. I live in the central San Joaquin Valley in Madera, California. Saturday I will be headed to Lake McClure in Snelling.

Cheers Larry1
