I have a 1987 Outrage 20 with a Johnson 200-HP Oceanrunner and 1987 Johnson 15-HP kicker. How do I prevent kicker from constantly releasing from its full tilted- up position when I'm running in the open ocean on main engine? It always fall down to its running position when hit a wave and then it's dragging in the water. FYI, the kicker is connected to main engine with a steering link. Also, recommend a higher thrust prop for the kicker. Thanks, Mike |

The BRP parts catalog http://epc.brp.com lists three OEM lower pitch propellers. P/N 386669 10 x 5 propeller P/N 398126 10 x 7 propeller P/N 387389 9.25 x 8 propeller After your select your motor, look under gearcase and you'll find all the prop options. The first two are available for ~$75 on ebay right now. |

Put more tension on the level that holds it in place with a bungee cord or strap. |

Thanks for the replies. I mis-stated my kicker year. It's a 1996 J15RLED. I looed on the BRP site, I only saw one prop listed for the 15. As for the bungee, I tried that prior to connecting the motors together with a steering linkage. Before they were connected, I would raise the kicker into it'd locked position, then cock it all the way to the port side and I even installed an eye bolt on the motor to hook a bungee onto and secured the other end to the transom. The kicker would still release from the locked position when hitting a wave and the bungee would just make it bounce up and down. Now that the motors are connected, I can't use the bungee because the motor turns with the main engine even when it's in the full tilted position, due to the linkage. Thanks again for all your advise. |

Assuming you mean the J15RLEDS, the diagram shows three OEM props that fit. The 174817 9 x 11 prop (ships on the 15). They all use the same lower unit so you can put any of the above props on any of the above motors. I'm sure there are after market options as well. |

Thanks, 199213. I appreciate the clarification. I thought that, since the other 2 props were spececified for the other hp motors, that they weren't recommended for the 15. Would you have a recommendation as to which of the 2 optional props would be better for my application? |

For your intended use of that motor as a kicker you want the 10 x 7 Sailboat prop or this 10 x 5 from i-boats, http://boatpropellers.iboats.com/Johnson-Outboard-Propellers/ ?horsepower=15&rotation=Standard&year=1987&session_id=782931251& cart_id=820587645 |

Is it possible to fashion a wood or hard rubber block that slips under the tilt mechanism to prevent the motor from bouncing down? Perhaps you can make something that slips in tightly, and is held in place with shock cord or webbing. This would allow the powerhead to still rotate when the big motor turns, but keep the kicker from folding down to the run position. |

Thanks for the replies. Andy, I was thinking of some sort of block. Does anyone have any experience with what material and shape and securing method would be secure but very convenient to remove? Is my problem unique?, it seems to me that anyone with a kicker would have the same problem, or is there something I should be adjusting/tightening to prevent this from happening. Jechura, thanks for the prop references. Do you have an opinion on 3 vs. 4 blade for a kicker appication? |

Had the same kicker problem with the 8 hp on my 18 Outrage. A piece of oak 3/4" x 2" x 10" long has been in use for around 5 years now. Drilled a hole in the end of the wood block for a 1/4" rope approx. 18" long that attaches inside the well. Not exactly high tech but it locks the motor at it's highest position and eliminates any up/down movement while underway. |

Here's an update. I went with the Solas Amita 4 blade 10x7. Thanks to all of you who helped with the selection options. As fot the kicker falling down issue, after listening to everyone's advice I tried a 1 inch diameter oak dowel, shoved in the small triangle between the lift bracket and the mounting hardware. It fit snugly and worked like a charm in my first trial run to Block Island a few hours ago. Thanks again to everyone and to Tom Clark, who sent me an e-mail and to Continuous Wave for always coming through. It's a beautiful evening here in RI, I'm heading out fishing. |
