[A 2001 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 21] came with an Optimax 200-HP and a 15 x 17 stainless propeller Mercury [unclear, probably means MIRAGEplus]. [During] regular boating, 25-MPH to 35-MPH, everything is fine. But when we wake board, ski, and tube, and are running around 20-MPH and turning a lot, the propeller cavitates. I wouldn't mind loosing a few hundred RPM and get a 15 x 16. But for the cavitation, would a 14 or 13-inch diameter prop with a larger pitch be better? Or will I be sacrificing something?

Thanks

OK, a 2001 21' Outrage with a (presumably 2001) Mercury OptiMax 200 and a 15-1/2" x 17" MIRAGEplus propeller.

The MIRAGEplus is a good all around prop, but it will ventilate (NOT cavitate) on acceleration and turning on some boats where the motor is mounted up a bit, which itself is good for top speed, cruising and fuel economy, but not for turning.

For water sports, a prop with better grip will be more satisfactory.

The obvious best grip choice is the Mercury REVOLUTION4. I would try a 14-5/8" x 15" REVOLUTION4 first. It might be underpropped for cruising but you will have very good acceleration.

There is no 15" x 16" MIRAGEplus, only a 15-3/4" x 15" size, so forget about that; it won't offer any better gip, though the acceleration would be awesome.

Also consider the Mercury Enertia, which in my experience grips extremely well. You may even be able to step up to 18" pitch in this model.

I don't know if any prop will help under those conditions. Making a sharp turn at 20-MPH is gonna cavitate. 21' deep V boats don't like being run at 20mph either.

Having spent a lot of time waterskiing, tuning and towing skiers, tubers, et al. over the years, in a variety of boats, I can assure you that the right prop will make a HUGE difference in how well the motor maintains grip in a tight, slow turn.

Purchased a Mercury REVOLUTION4 17 pitch and if fixed the problem. Thanks for your help.
