I've traded in my 1984 90-HP Evinrude for a rebuilt later model 88-HP Evinrude. The name plate clearly shows the model designation except for the model year. I can't tell if it's E88TLEO or E88TLED. Therefore I'm [not] sure if I have a 1995 or 1996 engine. My problem is that 1996 seems to be a cutoff year for ready availability of shop manuals. The 1995 manual is more expensive and more difficult to obtain than the 1996 manual.

My old 1984 shop manual is of limited use since the carburetor timing linkage and ignition is much different from my old 1984. Although I have a Clymer manual which covers engines up to 1990 and the linkage after 1988 seems to be close to that of my new engine I much prefer the manufacturer's shop manual for the actual model year.

My dilemma; do I order the 1996 manual or the 1995 manual? (BRC refers orders of their engine manuals to The Ken Cook Co.)

Look on the engine block for the freeze plug. It should have the model number on that as well.

A 1995 engine uses the round red "cannon plug" to connect to the boat's wiring harness.

In 1996, the wiring connection was changed to the MWS style which uses 3 Deutsch connectors - 2 6-pin rectangulars and 1 3-pin triangular. 1996 was the first year for the 4-lte System Check warning guages
