Hello. I have recently purchased a 1987 Temptation 2500 with a 454 sterndrive. The motor needs to be rebuilt. I used to have a Temptation with twin outboards. How is [a Boston Whaler TEMPTATION 2500] with a sterndrive versus outboards?

I think you must be citing the displacement of the engine in the sterndrive at 454-cubic-inches. What is the horsepower?

The 454 (7.4 liter) sterndrive used in the Temptation 2500 was made by MerCruiser and was coupled to their Bravo One outdrive.

It was rated at 330 HP, but a modern replacement 7.4 liter motor could be considerably more powerful than that.

Addendum:

An earlier price list I found lists the power for the Temptation 2500 Sterndrive as the MerCruiser 454 MAGNUM, rated at 365 HP.

Yes, it is a 454 cu. In. With 330 hp mercruiser. unfortunately it has an alpha drive and not the preferred bravo drive. I have always had outboard whalers so I am not sure what to expect with the sterndrive on a whaler hull.

Even with the Alpha Drive, that boat should easily reach 50 MPH and have strong acceleration.

A Mercury Revolution 4 propeller would be a good choice for the Alpha One drive.

Be careful with the throttle. Alpha one gen ones are OK to about 300hp. Putting the smaller out drives behind big blocks engines was tried and abandoned by many boat builders. If it were me when you remove the engine I would switch out the transom assembly to accept a Bravo.
