[I--please capitalize the initial letter of the initial word of each sentence, the personal pronoun "I", and any proper nouns--]have right now [a 1979] [J]ohnson 85-HP. [T]here's no visble markings to [identify] the propeller size [I] have. [H]ow do [I] determine the size? |

If on a 16/17 hull it should be a 13.25 x 17 or a 13-3/8 x 17. |

You might have to remove [the propeller]. [The factory markings of pitch and diameter] can be on the hub front or rear. Len |

You can easily measure the diameter of a propeller. Measure the radius length from the center of the propeller shaft to a blade tip. Multiply this measurement by two for the diameter. You cannot easily measure the pitch of a propeller by just observing the propeller or taking simple measurements of it. |

Deducing propeller pitch by measurement or observation can be done using a technique described in the book, PROPELLER HANDBOOK, by Dave Gerr, in Appendix B, "Measuring the Propeller: Procedure for Finding Diameter and Pitch." http://www.amazon.com/ Propeller-Handbook-Installing-Understanding-Propellers/dp/0071381767 The link above will let you preview portions of the book. It is an excellent reference on propellers. |

Thanks Jim. I think [I--please capitalize this word] might need a new [propeller]. [The propellers] measured 12-1/2-inch [diameter] and 11-1/4-inch [diameter][.] [W]oe is me. |

Oh boy. [I-please capitalize this word] was wrong. [Got to check numbers] on [propellers] [and apparently found they were marked] 13-1/4 x 17 and 13 x 15. Both worn and nicked up. [Changed to new topic--please start a new thread for a new topic--jimh] |

It sounds like you found markings on the propeller that identified their pitch and diameter. [Thread closed.] |
