Did some prop testing today. Full tank of fuel, two people (total) on the boat. Lightly loaded. 1993 Outrage 22' I keep forgetting to look, but I think the motor is mounted 3 holes up. If not 3, at least 2. The two props I ran were the Stiletto Advantage II 14.25 x 19 and a Mercury Vensura/Offshore, also 14.25 x 19. Information was averaged between two runs in gusting winds up to 15-20mph. "Trimmed Up" was w/ the motor trimmed up for about 4 seconds. The last reading (highest rpm/max speed) was w/ motor trimmed beyond that point. I trimmed until I heard it start to cavitate and then went back down. Here are the numbers in an excel sheet: http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/Triton_38/1993%20Outrage%2022/ ?action=view¤t=Outrage22PreformanceSheet.jpg Stiletto Advantave II 14.25 x 19 / Mercury Vensura/Offshore Trimmed Down Trimmed Up
- I know I am able to hit 5700/5800rpm w/ the Stiletto as I did on a calm day, two people, and full tank. I hit 46.9mph doing so. - Although the speed numbers are comparable, the ride characteristics were COMPLETELY different. I was amazed at how dramatic it was. The Stiletto makes the boat ride with a very bow high attitude. It's hard to explain...It is not to the point where I would say the boat has a PROBLEM with porpoising, but the bow does wander up and down a bit more than normal when hitting waves. So I suppose it does porpoise a bit, but I have ridden on boats where the porpoising would occur in almost still water w/ the slightest amount of trim added, that is what I would consider a porpoising "problem". The Vensura/Offshore put the bow down...A LOT. It wouldn't surprise me if the difference was 1ft in elevation change. Even with the motor trimmed up, I didn't feel a lot of the hull out of the water. The boat felt much more planted and the motor seemed to turn easier around the 3000-3500rpm range. I did not have problems with the prop blowing out or losing grip. I found so bay chop to run through, very close together 3 footers or so. Following the waves I noticed I had to pay more attention to speed as I was getting closer to being able to stuff the bow into a wave than I have been getting used to w/ the Stiletto. Heading into the waves was interesting. Although the bow was lowered I only lowered my plane speed by about 1mph, this made a condition where I felt each and every wave that I hit. With the Stiletto I felt more like I could ride the tops of the waves instead of going through each one of them. I was not able to test in Ocean condition, where I think the Offshore would be able to shine a little brighter. With a higher wave height and increased wave period I think the flatter riding hull could really be a benefit. So right now I am really confused as to which prop is better. I'm thinking that the Stiletto would be better if I had trim tabs on the boat, in which case I could use the tabs to bring the bow down if needed and if not I could ride higher out of the water. Hope this was helpful and of interest. Your thoughts on which prop might be better and others I might want to try? |

Sorry, the italicized rpm/speed numbers were when the boat was able to get on plane. |

Jim, is it possible to change the title of the thread to include a question about planning attitude and or ride characteristics? Something like, "Outrage 22 Report - Stiletto vs. Vensura Ride Characteristics" Thanks. |

Thought of one other note, the Stiletto was actually quicker to plane than the Offshore/Vensura. The Vensura did have all of it's vent holes plugged. If I am able to test the prop again, I'd like to remove two of the plugs to see what happens. Are they easily removed w/o damaging the plugs? I need to stop replying to my own thread now... |

An update. Yesterday coming in from fishing I hit a new speed record for the boat. I was solo, w/ fishing gear, near full tank. Trimmed way up, going against the wind with lot so air under the hull and I hit 48.7mph. Didn't see what RPM I was spinning though. |

I would be interested in seeing how your boat performs versus Andygere's 22 with 200 E-tec. Both engines are about the same size 60 degree block. I think Andy is running the same Vensura prop. Considering your boat has bottom paint, 49 MPH is a VERY respectable speed for that Mercury 200 EFI. |

Actually, I was running the Stiletto. The Vensura has since been returned to it's owner, I didn't like the way the boat handled with it. Very rough ride. Also, I have a clean bottom. I think Andy has bottom paint. He has the cuddy and that t-top. Me thinks I win that race. |
