I have a 170 Montauk with a 90 hp FourStroke EFI (Veradito) and I had my motor raised two holes. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v665/warrent/ 170%20Montauk%20speed%20runs/DSC_3704.jpg Here are a few pictures of my anti-ventilation plate with my Turbo Lift hydrofoil. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v665/warrent/ 170%20Montauk%20speed%20runs/DSC_3698.jpg My prop is about one inch anyway from my anti-ventilation plate. Here is a video showing my AV plate, I think I'm traveling around 4500 rpm in this video. Should I raise my motor all the way up? Warren |

Warren -- You should raise the motor one more bolt hole if you are curious how it will affect your boat's performance. |

You could certainly give it a shot. Have you been able to try any other props? Some dealers have demo props for customers to try. What does the Turbo Lift hydrofoil do for you? Does it create any additional drag. I'd be curious to know if the top speed increases without that device on the lower unit. Chuck |

I guess it isn't worth the brain damage lifting it another hole. Any improvement isn't going to be very noticeable. I hope to get out this weekend on a 90 mile round trip in the ocean this weekend. I will know if the motor can be raised after 90 miles in ocean swells. In theory the Turbo Lift gets me on plane at lower rpms. The Turbo Lift also feels as though it sticks to the water better in ocean swells. I suppose I could get another prop but the gain might be to better my WOT speed by .5 mph. If I want better performance I think the next move is to increase horsepower by 28%. Swapping out my 90 hp motor for a 115 hp motor of same weight and gear ratio. All it takes is money. :-) Warren |

WT, What performance have you gained in raising the engine 2 holes? Did you raise 2 and add the "plate" at he same time? I have the same original set up...just curious. Hal, Waseca, MN |

Hal, performance gains since raising my motor two holes up have been faster to plane, lighter steering, quicker but not really faster. I used to spin up to 6,000 rpm at WOT and can spin up to 6200 now. I suppose if I increased the pitch of my prop by one inch I might pick up some speed at WOT. I guess that my boat is close enough to being optimized that any little tweaks won't make noticeable differences. Like if I spent $400 for a new prop will I get 2 mph at WOT? probably no. If I spent $100 to raise my motor another hole will I get more speed at WOT? Probably no. Now if I knew for sure that I'd get 2 mph or more increase at WOT from 45 to 47 mph, I might spend $500. :-) |

According to Mercury, for a boat that does 45 MPH top end, it doesn't gain any speed by raising the anti-ventailation plate more than 3/4" above water flow. http://www.marinepartsman.com/installing-an-outboard-on-your-boat.html Warren's observations seem to prove this out. It should be remembered, however, that "bolt hole" settings don't mean much, since the Mercury mid-range shaft length is a longer than standard. It's anti-vent height above water flow that counts, not bolt hole counts. To justify a setting of 1-1/2" above water flow, the boat should be capable of running 58 to 60 MPH. |

Warren you could pay $50 and have a shop double cup your prop or add a little pitch to get you down to 6k. You might get 2mph for $50. |

Partner, you're obsessing. I've been in your boat many times, and I've chased after her in a couple of different Whalers over the past several years. You've got sweet MegaBite so perfectly dialed in that any further move, in any direction at all, can only be counter-productive IMO. Man oh man, squeezing 44+ mph out of a 90 hp Veradito on a fully rigged (kicker included) Montauk 170, and still maintaining her fine sea-keeping qualities (i.e., not having your motor up so high it'll break loose in our lumpy seas)...what more do you want from your old girl? My advice -- always sound, of course -- is to leave it alone and enjoy. Your boat is basically a workboat, not a speedboat, and because of your animal-like personality, you use her hard and take her places many at this website couldn't even imagine. Enough already, old friend. And see you this coming Sunday -- but don't expect me to chase you all the way up to Gualala, at any speed ;-) Tony |
